Student answer (Band 6.0)

In the globalized society, technology has significantly advanced. Many individuals believe that loss of specific plants and animals impacted the environmental problems. However, others claim that there are several other pressing environmental issues. In this essay, I will discuss both views and share my opinion.

One of the major reason of depleted environment is the extinction of several flora and fauna. To set up complexes, malls and modern amusement park, businesses cut down the forests which also is the main reason for extinction of species. Also, people become modernized and prefers to move into luxurious apartments and leaving behind traditional open land for other purposes such as factories, tourists sport, due to which natural habitats are disturbed or lost. For example, in many developing cities, large areas of forests and agricultural land are converted into residential colonies and shopping complexes. As a result, animals lose their natural habitats and plants are destroyed, which can gradually reduce the population of several species.

On the other side, problems such as climate change and pollution affect a much larger population. global warming causes extreme weather, rising temperatures and sea-level rise. Also, oceans, rivers and even drinking water is contaminated with chemical and industries waste, which not only impact the health of human being, but also life threatening for aquatic and other animals. For instance, Severe air pollution and extreme weather conditions in large cities can cause respiratory and cardiovascular diseases, and reduce people's quality of life.

In conclusion, In my opinion both the loss of species and other environmental problems are serious concerns. However, I believe that climate change and pollution are more pressing because they affect a much larger population and can also contribute to the destruction of natural habitats and the loss of wildlife.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The response addresses all parts of the prompt by discussing both views and providing a clear personal opinion. The ideas are relevant, such as the impact of urbanization on biodiversity and the broader consequences of climate change. However, the development of these ideas is somewhat limited. For instance, the link between 'modernized' living and habitat loss is mentioned but could be more deeply explored with more specific examples. The position is consistent throughout, and the conclusion effectively synthesizes the two viewpoints while justifying the writer's stance. To reach a higher band, the student should aim to provide more nuanced arguments and deeper analysis of the environmental problems mentioned.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The essay is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a conclusion. Each paragraph has a central theme, and the progression of ideas is easy to follow. Cohesive devices such as 'However', 'For instance', and 'On the other side' are used effectively to link sentences and paragraphs. While the paragraphing is appropriate, some transitions feel slightly mechanical. The referencing is generally clear, though some sentences could be better connected to improve the flow. Overall, the structure is coherent and supports the development of the argument well.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

The vocabulary is generally adequate for the task, with some attempts at using topic-specific language like 'flora and fauna', 'contaminated', and 'respiratory and cardiovascular diseases'. There are occasional inaccuracies in word choice, such as 'depleted environment' instead of 'environmental degradation' and 'tourists sport' instead of 'tourist spots'. The range is sufficient to convey meaning clearly, but it lacks the sophistication and precision required for higher bands. Improving the use of collocations and more precise academic terminology would enhance the quality of the writing.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

The essay demonstrates a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the meaning is always clear, there are several grammatical errors, such as subject-verb agreement issues ('One of the major reason' should be 'reasons') and article usage ('the loss of specific plants' is correct, but 'the main environmental problem' is used inconsistently). Punctuation is generally functional, though some comma usage is awkward. The majority of the sentences are understandable, but the frequency of minor errors prevents the writing from reaching a higher band. Focusing on proofreading for basic grammatical accuracy would be beneficial.
