Student answer (Band 7.5)

Environmental problems have become a major concern in recent decades. While some people believe that the extinction of certain plant and animal species is the most serious environmental issue today, others argue that problems such as climate change and pollution are more significant. In my opinion, although the loss of biodiversity is a serious concern, climate change and environmental pollution have a greater overall impact on both humans and nature.

On the one hand, the disappearance of particular species can have serious consequences for the environment. Every plant and animal plays a role in maintaining the balance of an ecosystem. For example, the decline of bees and other pollinating insects can negatively affect the reproduction of plants and reduce agricultural productivity. Furthermore, once a species becomes extinct, it is impossible to bring it back naturally. The loss of biodiversity may therefore weaken ecosystems and make them less capable of adapting to environmental changes. For these reasons, protecting endangered species should be considered an important environmental priority.

On the other hand, there are environmental problems that affect a much larger proportion of the world's population. Climate change, for instance, is causing rising temperatures, extreme weather events, melting glaciers and rising sea levels. These changes can threaten food production, water supplies and human settlements across the world. Similarly, air and water pollution caused by industries, vehicles and plastic waste can directly damage human health as well as ecosystems. Unlike the extinction of an individual species, these problems can affect millions of people simultaneously and can also accelerate the destruction of natural habitats. Therefore, I believe they deserve greater attention and immediate action.

In conclusion, the extinction of plant and animal species is undoubtedly a serious environmental problem because it damages biodiversity and ecosystems. However, I believe that climate change and pollution are more pressing issues because of their wider and more direct effects on humans and the natural world. Governments and individuals should therefore address these problems while continuing to protect endangered species.
