Student answer (Band 6.0)

Some people believe that the loss of specific species of plants and animals is the main environmental problem of today's time while other think differently. This essay will discuss both views and give my opinion on basis of several reasons.

People believe that losing the lives of various species is the main environmental problem because both plants and animals maintan the food cycle in nature. Food cycle serves an important place in the environment as each and every plant and animals are dependent on each other for food and survival. Moreover, the plants and animals are used by humans in various activities. For example, a skin of tiger is used to make leather belts. Losing specific plants and animals not only affect the biodiversity but also affects the products made from them. For example, extinction of asiatic lions not only affect biodiversity but also has an impact on the product made from them.

On the other hand, people think that their are many other environmental problems other than losing specific plants and animals, because growing population causes various problem which are hazardous to the environment. Many major issues such as air pollution, climatic changes, water pollution are the major issues as it affect our life and both plants, animal's life. In addition, Global warming increases the temperature of earth and affect the living organisms. If these conditions, be controlled then extinction of plant and animal species can be easily controlled. For instance, reducing global warming not only help humans but make plants and animals to survive in better environment.

In conclusion, I think that there are many distinct problems other than loss of living beings and plants due to the reasons and explanations given above.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The response addresses both views and provides a clear personal opinion. However, the development of ideas is somewhat limited. For instance, the argument regarding the 'skin of a tiger' is not well-integrated into the broader environmental context, and the example of 'Asiatic lions' is repetitive. While the prompt asks for a discussion of both views, the second body paragraph focuses heavily on general pollution rather than directly contrasting why those issues might be considered 'more important' than biodiversity loss. To reach a higher band, you should provide more nuanced explanations for why one perspective might be considered more pressing than the other, rather than simply listing environmental problems.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The essay is logically organized into clear paragraphs, each with a central topic. Cohesive devices such as 'Moreover', 'On the other hand', and 'In addition' are used to link ideas. However, the flow within paragraphs is occasionally mechanical. For example, the transition between the importance of the food cycle and the use of animal products for leather is abrupt. Additionally, the concluding sentence is somewhat weak, as it summarizes the existence of other problems without clearly reinforcing your own position in relation to the two viewpoints discussed. Improving the variety of linking words and ensuring smoother transitions between sentences would enhance the overall coherence.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'biodiversity', 'extinction', and 'hazardous'. However, there are some inaccuracies in word choice and collocation. For example, 'maintaining the food cycle' is slightly unnatural; 'sustaining the food chain' would be more precise. The phrase 'today's time' is also non-standard. There is some repetition of basic vocabulary, such as 'major issues' and 'important', which limits the sophistication of the writing. To improve, focus on using more precise academic collocations and synonyms to avoid repeating the same words throughout the essay.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

The essay uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the meaning is generally clear, there are several grammatical errors that occur throughout the text. For instance, there are subject-verb agreement issues such as 'each and every plant and animals are' (should be 'is') and 'other think differently' (should be 'others'). There are also punctuation and article errors, such as 'a skin of tiger' (should be 'the skin of a tiger') and 'their are many' (should be 'there are'). These errors do not impede communication, but they are frequent enough to prevent a higher score. Focusing on proofreading for basic subject-verb agreement and article usage would be beneficial.
