Student answer (Band 6.0)

While many people believe that the main cause of environmental hazard is the extinction of some species of plants and animals others argue that there more important factors that constitute harm to the society. Although both perspectives have merit, i completely agree with the people that say that there are more dangerous activities that affect the environment.

on the one hand, certain individuals argue that the major cause of environment problem are eradication of some plants species and animals. This because societies have invested more in deforestation and hunting of wild animals and these have cause imbalance ecology. Although people cut and burn trees majorly for construction, this has resulted into erosion. Furthermore, some wild animals who were suppose to be conserved for recreational activity has been hunted down for meals. For instance, fishery farmers usually distort aquatic habitat by practicing unlawfully fishing. Therefore, this activities have affect many ecology system such that trees and fish are reducing in population.

On the other hand, I support those who believe that there are other significant factors that are hazardous to the human habitat. Firstly, coal use by vehicles result in air pollution and it also lead to global warming. Secondly, fumes that are release from the industries into the atmosphere and industrial chemicals that flows into river constitute to the environment problems. For instance, when companies release their waste into the river, it may kill the fishes in that river and makes the water unhealthy for consumption.

In conclusion, although consistently eradicating of some essential plants and animals can result into ecology imbalance, I believe there are more important factors that affect the environment. These factors including by-product of coal and industrial waste, yet they causes more harm to people and the environment.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The response addresses both sides of the argument and provides a clear personal opinion. However, the development of ideas is somewhat limited. While you mention deforestation and pollution, the arguments lack depth and specific, well-explained examples. For instance, the mention of 'fishery farmers' is a bit vague and does not fully illustrate the impact on biodiversity. To reach a higher band, ensure that each point is supported by a more detailed explanation or a more concrete, real-world example. The position is consistent throughout, but the supporting arguments could be more robustly expanded to fully satisfy the requirements of a Band 7.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The essay is organized into logical paragraphs, and there is a clear progression of ideas. You use cohesive devices such as 'on the one hand,' 'furthermore,' and 'in conclusion' to link your points. However, some transitions feel slightly mechanical, and there are occasional issues with referencing and sentence-level cohesion, such as 'This because societies have invested...' which is missing a subject. The paragraphing is appropriate, but the flow between sentences could be improved by using a wider variety of linking words and ensuring that pronouns clearly refer back to their antecedents.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'extinction,' 'deforestation,' 'biodiversity,' and 'global warming.' However, there are several instances of awkward word choice and collocation errors, such as 'distort aquatic habitat' instead of 'disrupt aquatic habitats' and 'unlawfully fishing' instead of 'illegal fishing.' Additionally, there are some grammatical errors in word forms, such as 'consistently eradicating' instead of 'the consistent eradication.' While the vocabulary is sufficient to convey your meaning, it lacks the precision and flexibility required for a higher band score.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

The essay contains a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. However, there are frequent grammatical errors that occasionally impede the flow of reading. Common issues include subject-verb agreement (e.g., 'there more important factors'), missing articles (e.g., 'to the environment problems'), and incorrect verb forms (e.g., 'these have cause imbalance'). While you attempt complex sentences, they are often marred by these errors. To improve, focus on proofreading for basic subject-verb agreement and ensuring that articles and prepositions are used correctly in context.
