IELTS Writing Task 2 question

Some people say that the main environmental problem of our time is the loss of particular species of plants and animals. Others say that there are more important environmental problems.

Discuss both these views and give your own opinion.

Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.

Student answer (Band 6.0)

There is an ongoing debate about environmental problems because climate change is creating catastrophic problems in many countries in the form of floods and cloudbursts. Some analysts believe that the current primary environmental problem is the loss of particular species of plants and animals, while others believe that there are more crucial environmental problems. From my perspective, there are more important problems than the loss of species, such as carbon emissions, deforestation and plastic pollution.

On the one hand, some critics believe that the loss of plants and animal species is the most important environmental problem because they believe that these species play a vital role in environment protection. certain type of plant is helpful to regulate water-level and particular type of animal such as wild animals hunt other animals to maintain the ecological balance. For instance, a current research from wild life experts indicate that they are working on a project to restore these species to protect biodiversity.

On the other hand, there are important problems such carbon emissions, plastic pollution and deforestation because these things belongs to everyday life. If we want clean and green environment we have to consider other alternatives, such as green energy, nuclear energy and paper bags. For example, World Health Organization is encouraging countries to use other alternative for energy and also use those materials which can be easily decompose. Therefore, many many countries are shifting to solar and nuclear energy for the protection of habitats.

To conclude this, although loss of species is concern, there are major problems needs attention for the protection of environment. In my opinion, every country should use alternative resources for the protection of the environment because we already have these resource the government only have to offer access to every citizen.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The response addresses all parts of the prompt, discussing both views and providing a clear personal opinion. The ideas are relevant, though the development is somewhat superficial. For example, the argument regarding the loss of species is supported by a general mention of ecological balance, but it lacks specific, concrete examples. Similarly, the discussion on carbon emissions and plastic pollution is clear but could be strengthened by more detailed analysis of why these are 'more important' than biodiversity loss. The position is consistent throughout, but the depth of argumentation is limited, which prevents a higher band score.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The essay is organized into logical paragraphs, with a clear introduction, two body paragraphs, and a conclusion. Cohesive devices are used, such as 'On the one hand', 'On the other hand', and 'For instance', which help guide the reader. However, some transitions are mechanical or slightly repetitive, such as the frequent use of 'problems' and 'important'. The referencing is generally clear, though the flow between sentences within paragraphs could be smoother. Overall, the progression of ideas is coherent, but the management of cohesive devices lacks the flexibility required for a higher band.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

The vocabulary is adequate for the task, allowing the student to express their ideas clearly. There are attempts to use topic-specific vocabulary like 'ecological balance', 'biodiversity', and 'carbon emissions'. However, the range is somewhat limited, and there are instances of awkward phrasing or minor collocation errors, such as 'these things belongs to everyday life' (should be 'belong') and 'many many countries' (repetitive). The student relies on basic vocabulary in several places, which limits the ability to convey more nuanced arguments. Expanding the range of synonyms and collocations would improve the score.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

The essay uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the meaning is generally clear, there are frequent grammatical errors that occasionally distract the reader. Examples include subject-verb agreement issues ('these things belongs'), missing articles ('a current research', 'for environment protection'), and awkward phrasing ('major problems needs attention'). Punctuation is generally functional, but the control over complex structures is inconsistent. To reach a higher band, the student needs to focus on eliminating basic errors and increasing the variety of error-free complex sentences.
