Student answer (Band 6.5)

Environmental concerns has become increasingly widespread, it is often argued that the major environmental loss is the extinction of many plants and animals, while others argue that other important factors are widely disrupted. In this essay i will explain both views and my opinion as well.

On the one hand, not only are the plants and animals quite beneficial for natural habitat but also play a key role in food chain. They are extremely important as plants are the main source of oxygen, while animals and insects are responsible for returning nutrients back into the soil. Hunting, human intervention and several developmental programs are responsible for the disappearance of particular species. For example, in Pakistan markhor is about to extinct due to hunting, though governments are enforcing several environmental protection laws to protect endangered species.

The major alarming environmental problems are rising due to pollution coming from vehicle emissions, disposing waste into rivers and lakes by factories, and chlorofluorocarbons emissions. This lead to several consequences including severe respiratory and gut diseases in humans while breathing and consuming water from contaminated rivers, respectively, and detrimental for animals and plants' habitat as well.

In my opinion, although both animals and plants' habitat and human health loses are detrimental, I believe environmental pollution directly affects the human health, while the extinction of particular species does not portrait immediate after effects but it would be alarmed in the long run.

In conclusion, although habitat loss is the serious concern, it can be prevented by strict environmental regulation on hunting and human intervention. I believe pollution is the major problem facing by today's world, which automatically leads to extinction of species.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5

The essay addresses both viewpoints and provides a clear personal opinion. However, the development of ideas is somewhat uneven. While the first body paragraph provides a specific example regarding the markhor in Pakistan, the second body paragraph regarding pollution is less focused, listing problems rather than fully exploring why they might be considered 'more important' than species loss. The conclusion attempts to synthesize the views, but the argument that pollution 'automatically leads to extinction' is a bit reductive. To reach a higher band, ensure that the comparison between the two environmental issues is more balanced and that the reasoning for your own opinion is more deeply explored.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The essay is logically organized into clear paragraphs, each with a distinct focus. Cohesive devices are used, such as 'On the one hand' and 'In conclusion', which help guide the reader. However, some transitions are slightly mechanical or awkward, such as the opening sentence which lacks a proper conjunction, leading to a comma splice. Additionally, the referencing in the second paragraph ('This lead to...') is slightly unclear as it refers back to a list of nouns rather than a specific concept. Improving the flow between sentences and ensuring more sophisticated linking words would enhance the overall coherence.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

The vocabulary is generally adequate for the task, with some attempts at topic-specific language like 'chlorofluorocarbons', 'natural habitat', and 'human intervention'. However, there are several instances of imprecise word choice and collocation errors, such as 'environmental loss is the extinction' (extinction is the loss) and 'does not portrait immediate after effects' (should be 'portray' or 'show'). The phrase 'major alarming environmental problems' is also slightly redundant. To improve, focus on using more precise collocations and ensuring that academic vocabulary is used in the correct context.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

The essay demonstrates a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are several grammatical errors that occur throughout the text, such as subject-verb agreement issues ('Environmental concerns has become', 'This lead to') and minor punctuation errors. The use of 'i' instead of 'I' is a recurring slip. While the meaning is generally clear and the errors do not impede communication, the frequency of these slips prevents the essay from reaching a higher band. Increasing the variety of complex structures while ensuring greater accuracy in basic grammar would be beneficial.
