Student answer (Band 6.0)

Some people believe that disappearance of particular animal and plant species is the prime environmental problem to look upon as both flora and fauna contribute in life cycles of living beings while others argue that there are more important environmental problems than these such as pollution and so on. This essay will discuss the both views before citing a suitable conclusion.

On the one hand, it is undeniable that species of plant and animals are the main pillars of environment. As numerous plant species are used to make antibiotics and medical cure for various diseases and loss of those species will put humans in a major threat as those medicines will become unable to produce due to extinction of those particular plant species. In addition, as all the animals contribute to the food chain, loss of animal species will entirely disturb the food chain which will ultimately affect the whole ecosystem along with humans as number of species act as a major food source for human beings and disappearance of them will indirectly affect human population.

On the other hand, there are some threats to the environment that must not be ignored at any means and one of them is pollution. Pollution does not only affect humans but it also disturbs all the other living organisms along with the whole ecosystem, as it damages the air quality index which affects the health of living organisms and also depletes the ozone layer which protect humans from the harmful rays that sun reflects. Also, pollution does not only affects air, it also damages water bodies, land as humans deposit the chemical and domestic waste in lakes and rivers, soil erosion is a major threat that occurs due to deforestation.

In my opinion, animal and plant preservation is necessary and requires solution but major environmental issues such as pollution, deforestation must deserve more of the attention of government and people so development could be sustained accordingly as threats could be controlled.

To conclude, although flora and fauna deserve some attention yet I firmly believe that other aforementioned environmental issues must be in prime focus for the population.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5

The response addresses all parts of the prompt, discussing both the loss of species and other environmental issues like pollution. You clearly state your position in the introduction and maintain it throughout the essay. The ideas are relevant and supported with examples, such as the role of plants in medicine and the impact of pollution on the ozone layer. To reach a higher band, ensure that your arguments are more deeply developed; for instance, the link between the food chain and human survival could be expanded with more specific detail to demonstrate a more thorough exploration of the topic.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The essay is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a conclusion. You use cohesive devices such as 'On the one hand', 'In addition', and 'To conclude' to guide the reader. However, some transitions feel slightly mechanical, and there are minor issues with referencing, such as the repetitive use of 'as' to link clauses. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate distinct ideas. To improve, try to vary your cohesive devices and ensure that the flow between sentences is smoother and less reliant on simple conjunctions.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'flora and fauna', 'ecosystem', and 'deforestation'. There are some inaccuracies in word choice and collocation, such as 'medical cure' (should be 'medicinal treatments') and 'sun reflects' (should be 'sun emits'). While these errors do not impede communication, they prevent the vocabulary from being considered 'flexible' or 'precise'. To achieve a higher score, focus on using more sophisticated collocations and ensuring that your word choices are contextually accurate.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While your meaning is generally clear, there are several grammatical errors, such as 'loss of those species will put humans in a major threat' (should be 'at risk') and 'pollution does not only affects' (should be 'affect'). Additionally, there are some missing articles and minor punctuation issues. The frequency of these errors suggests that while you can handle complex structures, your control over them is not yet consistent. Focusing on subject-verb agreement and article usage will help improve your accuracy.
