IELTS Writing Task 2 question

Some people say that the main environmental problem of our time is the loss of particular species of plants and animals. Others say that there are more important environmental problems.

Discuss both these views and give your own opinion.

Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.

Student answer (Band 6.0)

While some people argues that the extinction of specific genres of plants or animals leads to environmental degradation or pollution, some have the notion that there are some other reasons or mistakes that we are doing since ages and this is the actual reason behind the destruction of environment.

The geographical modification of earth is a continuous process that has been changing since its existence. When we look into the history, we can find clear records showing there was a time when no plant or animal exist on this planet. But as the time passes, earth have undergone distinct changes making the environment favorable for ancient species to live and grow. But as it is an ongoing process, when things become unsuitable for them, they died and new genres took their place who are more capable and compatible. However, every specie plays a specific role to benefit the environment and by loosing them we have lost those benefits also. For example, we are lacking oak and maple plants today in number as they were years ago. They not only provide shelter but were also beneficial for rain, soil and souce of food for various animals.

On the contrary, some people mentions that urbanization, deforestation, increased cultivation, floods and soil erosion are the major problems behind this deficit. Not only various kind of species are becoming endangered but some are extinct or near to extinction. These modern developments are arising the global warming and pollution all over the world. The results are high temperatures across the globe, melting of glaciers, variation in seasons, more UV exposure, lesser rains or acid rains, shortage of food and increasing health risks day by day.

I solely agrees with the idea of the people who said that there are other prominent issues to look on besides discussing about those species that are no longer in existence. With artificial methods we may have a possibility to grow those who are extinct but we need to look for future.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The response addresses both views and provides a clear personal opinion. However, the development of ideas is somewhat uneven. The discussion on species loss is a bit repetitive, and the argument for 'other problems' is not fully explored in terms of why they are more significant. The conclusion is brief and lacks a strong synthesis of the arguments presented. To reach a higher band, ensure that each viewpoint is supported by more specific, logical reasoning rather than general statements about environmental change.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The essay is organized into logical paragraphs, each with a clear focus. Cohesive devices are used, such as 'However,' 'On the contrary,' and 'For example,' which help the flow of ideas. However, some transitions feel slightly mechanical, and the referencing is occasionally unclear, such as in the second paragraph where the link between historical geological processes and the specific issue of species loss is somewhat disjointed. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate the different viewpoints.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

The vocabulary is generally adequate for the task, though it lacks the precision and sophistication required for higher bands. There are some word choice errors, such as using 'genres' instead of 'species' or 'types,' and 'souce' (spelling error). Phrases like 'since ages' are non-standard. While the student attempts to use topic-specific vocabulary like 'deforestation,' 'global warming,' and 'acid rains,' the overall range is somewhat limited and occasionally repetitive.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

The essay contains a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are frequent grammatical errors, such as subject-verb agreement issues ('some people argues,' 'earth have undergone,' 'every specie plays,' 'I solely agrees') and tense inconsistencies. While these errors do not completely impede communication, they are persistent throughout the text. A wider range of error-free complex structures is needed to move into the 7.0+ range.
