Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.

Student answer (Band 6.0)

Some people would argue that disappearing of rare types of plants and animals is central issue of present world. Others would argue that more challenging issues are crucial other than environment. I strongly agree that concerns of rising global temperatures and environmental are more important to address but rare species of habitat should also be protected.

According to my view, increased temperatures due to change in weather patterns, and caused by green house emissions have devastating affects on melting of ice caps , resulting in natural disasters. These natural disasters in form of floods, heavy rains have negative impacts on natural environment and human population.

Environmental pollution is an other important issue caused by pollutants in to air by factories damaging the air quality.

In addition, soil and water is being contaminated from improper disposal of waste and improper industrial activities.

Noise pollution from heavy traffic is also another concern, destroying the peaceful environment, impacting mental well-being of individuals in a society.

However, issue of loss of wild life and plant can not be undermined to maintain a healthy level of biodiversity. Protecting rare species have positive advantages on environment and creates a sense of responsibility among citizens to take care of their natural habitats. For instance, China strives to protect Panda by providing suitable environment.

In conclusion, Rising temperatures and pollution are more important challenges, because they have direct impact on physical and emotional health of the individuals in the long term but rare species of animals and plants must also be protected and should not be neglected by the government.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The response addresses both sides of the argument and provides a clear personal opinion. However, the development of ideas is somewhat uneven. While you mention global warming and pollution as more pressing issues, the arguments remain at a surface level. For instance, the paragraph on pollution lists several types (air, soil, water, noise) without fully exploring the 'why' or 'how' these are more critical than biodiversity loss. The conclusion effectively summarizes your stance, but to reach a higher band, you should aim to provide more depth in your supporting arguments, perhaps by explaining the long-term systemic consequences of climate change versus the localized impact of species loss.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The essay is organized into logical paragraphs, each with a clear focus. You use some cohesive devices such as 'In addition', 'However', and 'For instance' to link ideas. However, the progression between sentences is sometimes mechanical, and the flow could be improved by using a wider variety of linking words. Additionally, some referencing is slightly unclear, such as the transition between the discussion of pollution and the counter-argument regarding biodiversity. Improving the use of referencing and substitution would help the essay read more naturally and cohesively.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'biodiversity', 'contaminated', and 'greenhouse emissions'. However, there are several instances of awkward phrasing and word choice errors, such as 'disappearing of rare types' (should be 'the disappearance of rare species') and 'devastating affects' (should be 'effects'). The vocabulary is generally functional but lacks the precision and sophistication required for higher bands. To improve, focus on learning collocations and ensuring that word forms (nouns vs. verbs) are used correctly in context.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

The essay uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the meaning is generally clear, there are frequent grammatical errors, particularly with articles ('the' is often missing, e.g., 'in form of floods') and prepositions ('pollutants in to air'). There are also issues with subject-verb agreement and pluralization, such as 'protecting rare species have' (should be 'has'). These errors occur throughout the text. To improve, focus on proofreading for basic grammatical accuracy and ensuring that complex sentences are constructed with correct punctuation and agreement.
