Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.

Student answer (Band 6.0)

Environmental problems are increasing day by day. Some people believe that these problems occur due to the loss of plant species, and we are also losing animals. Moreover, others have a different opinion; they argue that there are many other reasons that are causing environmental issues.

The world's population is increasing over time. When the population increases, there is a need for new land and homes. This is causing deforestation and the loss of many eco-friendly plants. Many animals migrate or die due to deforestation.

On the other hand, some people believe that environmental issues are caused by pollution. They might argue that there are so many other problems that are far more important to tackle instead of focusing on specific plant species and animals. They believe environmental problems are caused by industrial waste or by machines.

I strongly believe that environmental issues are directly linked to deforestation and the loss of plant and animal species, because in our ecosystem plants and animals play a vital role in balancing the environment. Some plants are eco-friendly and absorb harmful gases. While, Animals also feed on other animals, which could be dangerous for human lives. Likewise, due to deforestation, we are losing such species day by day. For a healthy environment, we should control these specific issues and can also improve sustainable development in our country.

In conclusion, the loss of plant and animal species is a fundamental cause of environmental issues, which is also harmful for upcoming generations. Pollution is also a main reason for such problems, but when we have a nature-friendly environment, we can deal with such issues smoothly.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The response addresses both views and provides a clear personal opinion. However, the development of ideas is somewhat limited. While you mention deforestation and pollution, the arguments remain quite general. For instance, the claim that animals feeding on others is 'dangerous for human lives' is not clearly linked to the environmental debate, making the logic slightly tenuous. To reach a higher band, ensure that your supporting points are more directly relevant to the core environmental issues and provide more specific examples or deeper explanations for why one problem might be considered more significant than another.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The essay is organized into logical paragraphs, each with a clear focus. You use some cohesive devices such as 'On the other hand', 'Moreover', and 'In conclusion' to guide the reader. However, the flow between sentences is sometimes a bit mechanical, and the transition between the discussion of deforestation and the counter-argument about pollution could be smoother. Additionally, the use of referencing is occasionally repetitive. Improving the variety of linking words and ensuring that each paragraph develops a single, cohesive idea will help improve the overall flow and structure of your writing.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'deforestation', 'sustainable development', and 'ecosystem' correctly. However, the vocabulary is somewhat basic and repetitive in places, such as the frequent use of 'environmental problems' and 'issues'. There are also some minor inaccuracies in word choice, such as 'eco-friendly plants' (which is not a standard collocation in this context) and the phrasing 'control these specific issues'. To improve, try to incorporate more precise academic collocations and synonyms to avoid repetition and add sophistication to your arguments.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

The essay uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the meaning is generally clear, there are frequent grammatical errors, particularly with punctuation and sentence fragments. For example, 'While, Animals also feed on other animals' contains an unnecessary comma and a capitalization error. There are also issues with subject-verb agreement and article usage, such as 'the loss of plant species' versus 'the loss of particular species'. While these errors do not impede communication, they occur frequently enough to prevent a higher score. Focusing on sentence boundary control and proofreading for minor slips will be beneficial.
