Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.5
The response addresses both sides of the argument and provides an opinion, though the position is somewhat underdeveloped. The introduction is quite weak and lacks clarity regarding the writer's stance. While the body paragraphs touch upon relevant points, such as biodiversity loss and pollution, the arguments lack depth and specific supporting evidence. The conclusion is brief and does not fully synthesize the points made. To improve, ensure that the introduction clearly outlines the essay's direction and that each body paragraph contains a well-developed argument supported by clear, logical reasoning rather than just listing environmental issues.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.5
The essay is organized into paragraphs, but the flow between and within them is often disjointed. The use of cohesive devices is limited and sometimes mechanical, such as the repetitive use of 'And' to start sentences. Referencing is occasionally unclear, particularly in the second body paragraph where the connection between ideas is weak. The transition between the discussion of species loss and the broader environmental issues could be smoother. To improve, focus on using a wider variety of linking words and phrases to connect ideas logically and ensure that each paragraph has a clear topic sentence.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.0
The vocabulary is generally adequate for the task but lacks the precision and range required for a higher band. There are several instances of awkward phrasing, such as 'cervical this situation' and 'ecosystem station', which impede clarity. The student relies on basic terminology and struggles with collocations, such as 'very biggest problem'. To improve, focus on learning topic-specific vocabulary related to the environment (e.g., 'ecological equilibrium', 'anthropogenic impact') and practice using these words in context to ensure they are used accurately and naturally.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.0
The essay contains a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, but there are frequent grammatical errors throughout. Issues include subject-verb agreement (e.g., 'the loss the plants'), incorrect word forms (e.g., 'defrost' instead of 'destruction'), and punctuation errors. Some sentences are fragmented or lack necessary articles, which makes the text difficult to follow in places. To improve, focus on mastering basic sentence construction, specifically subject-verb agreement and the correct use of articles. Proofreading for common errors like missing prepositions or incorrect verb tenses will also significantly enhance the accuracy of your writing.
