Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 4.5
The response attempts to address both views regarding environmental problems and provides a personal opinion, satisfying the prompt's basic requirements. However, the development of ideas is limited and confused. The student misinterprets the phrase 'loss of particular species of plants and animals' as meaning general littering and human misbehavior in public places, rather than extinction or biodiversity loss. Consequently, the discussion drifts into irrelevant examples about people drinking whiskey, smoking, and damaging roads. While a position is stated, the arguments lack depth and rely on sweeping generalizations and vague assertions about factories and vehicles without clear supporting evidence. This places the response firmly within the lower-middle bands for Task Achievement.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 4.0
The text is organized into five paragraphs, reflecting a basic attempt at essay structure, including an introduction and a conclusion. However, overall progression is lacking, and ideas jump abruptly between sentences and paragraphs without logical bridges. Cohesive devices are minimal, mechanical, or misused (e.g., 'beacuse', 'another point is', 'that's why'), leading to frequent disruptions in the flow of ideas. Paragraphing is attempted, but individual paragraphs lack internal unity and clear topic sentences, making the overall arrangement somewhat disjointed and difficult to follow consistently.
Lexical Resource — Band 4.0
The vocabulary used is basic, repetitive, and often inaccurate. The student frequently repeats terms like 'environmental issue', 'nature issue', and 'animals'. There are numerous word choice and spelling errors throughout the text, such as 'beacuse', 'destoryed', 'whsiky', 'issure', and 'vechiles'. Less common lexical items are attempted but generally misused or poorly collated, which strains the reader's comprehension and reveals severe limitations in the student's active vocabulary range.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 4.0
The writing demonstrates a very limited range of grammatical structures. Simple sentences dominate, and attempts at complex structures are almost invariably faulty, resulting in run-on sentences, fragment sentences, and severe punctuation errors. Frequent grammatical errors—such as subject-verb agreement issues ('environmental problem is become', 'roads was damage'), incorrect verb forms ('can cause by', 'this lead by'), and missing articles—cause considerable difficulty for the reader and frequently distort the intended meaning.
