IELTS Writing Task 2 question

Some people say that the main environmental problem of our time is the loss of particular species of plants and animals. Others say that there are more important environmental problems.

Discuss both these views and give your own opinion.

Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.

Student answer (Band 6.0)

We have a number of environmental concerns, but from my perspective our biggest problem is loss of plant and animal life. Many would disagree, although I firmly believe in making necessary changes for preserving these endangered species.

Due to the rise in water contamination, air pollution and many such consequences of human negligence, the cost of life is paid by some animals and plants. The loss of their life is undervalued by some because they don't understand the long term results of living in such a world. If we keep letting this happen, in no time we might end up paying for simply breathing. The loss of plant life will not only deplete oxygen availability but also reduce food production, whereas the loss of animal life will shrinkin the biodiversity, which in return distrupts the entire ecological chain.Plants are not only necessary to sustain life but also have medicinal properties, loss of such crucial data and life will negatively affect future generations.

On the other hand some believe, we should focus on preserving the air quality, water resources, etc first because those in return will protect the very nature we intent to save. I believe we have to focus on both the issues simultaneously, but pay closer attention towards protecting the vulnearable species from the beginning. With governmenrt projects like National Animal Parks for endangered species and research based units for promoting healthy athmosphere for biological procreation of few species will help make a difference. Consequently, the most important aspect is to not let these situations arise in the first place, protecting every plant and animal should be our goal from the very start.

In conclusion, it should be our utmost priority to net let any loss of life occur while also focusing to not let environment pay the price of our actions. I believe in the next few year, Dodo would not be a common being that just expired from our world.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5

The response addresses all parts of the task by discussing both views—that the loss of specific species is the main environmental problem, and that other problems are more important—while clearly stating the writer's own opinion. The position is maintained throughout the essay. Ideas are extended and supported, such as when the student explains the consequences of losing plant life on oxygen and food production, and animal life on biodiversity. However, some arguments regarding other environmental issues on the opposing side are slightly general and could have been elaborated further. Overall, the task is successfully and fully addressed, earning a solid Band 7.0 for Task Achievement.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The essay displays a clear logical organisation with a discernible progression throughout. Introduction, body paragraphs, and conclusion are all present, and paragraphing is used appropriately to separate ideas. Cohesive devices are employed, such as 'Due to the rise in', 'On the other hand', and 'Consequently', which help connect the sentences and paragraphs. However, there are minor awkward transitions and occasional mechanical cohesive links, such as 'which in return distrupts', and some referencing is slightly vague. Progression is logical overall, but paragraph transitions could be smoother. This corresponds well to a Band 6.5 descriptor profile.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.5

The student demonstrates an adequate to sufficient range of vocabulary for the task, attempting less common items such as 'biodiversity', 'endangered species', 'contamination', and 'procreation'. However, there are noticeable spelling and word choice errors, including 'shrinkin', 'distrupts', 'intent' instead of 'intend', 'vulnearable', 'governmenrt', 'athmosphere', and 'net let' instead of 'not let'. While these errors do not impede overall communication, they prevent the lexical score from reaching Band 7.0. The appropriate use of some subject-specific terminology supports a Band 6.0.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

The writer uses a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, demonstrating attempts at conditional structures and relative clauses, such as 'If we keep letting this happen, in no time we might end up paying for simply breathing.' There are, however, several grammatical errors and punctuation slips throughout the text, such as missing commas after introductory phrases ('On the other hand some believe'), incorrect verb forms ('focus on preserving... first because those in return will protect'), and minor tense inconsistencies ('I believe in the next few year, Dodo would not be'). These errors occasionally cause the reader to pause, but communication remains clear, placing the response securely in Band 6.0.
