Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 4.5
The response attempts to address the prompt by discussing environmental problems and their impact on plants and animals, such as noise pollution, waste, and over-hunting. However, the student fails to adequately discuss both views in a balanced manner and struggles to maintain a clear overall position. The ideas presented are limited and frequently under-developed, lacking specific, well-supported explanations. Furthermore, the length requirement has NOT been met; the response contains only 225 words, falling short of the mandatory 250-word minimum. This under-length issue restricts the full development of the task and directly impacts the task achievement score, resulting in a rating of 4.5.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.0
The essay is divided into four paragraphs, showing an attempt at a standard essay structure. However, the overall progression of ideas is frequently unclear and logical links between sentences are often weak or faulty. Cohesive devices are used in a mechanical and sometimes repetitive manner, such as 'Categorically speaking' and 'Another reason for holding my reason is that'. Referencing is also confusing at times, such as the pronoun shifts ('your time', 'my reason'). Paragraphing is present, but internal cohesion does not flow smoothly, leading to a score of 5.0.
Lexical Resource — Band 4.5
The vocabulary used is basic and repetitive, with numerous spelling errors throughout the text, such as 'enviourmental', 'vehicals', 'undanger', 'ozon', 'clrear', and 'consclussion'. While the student attempts some less common vocabulary related to the topic like 'ripple effects' and 'depletion', these attempts are marred by inaccurate word choice and severe spelling mistakes that frequently impede communication. The lexical range is limited and minimally adequate for expressing basic thoughts, warranting a band score of 4.5.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 4.5
The response contains a very limited range of grammatical structures, relying heavily on simple sentences and faulty attempts at complex clauses. There are frequent grammatical errors, such as subject-verb agreement issues ('the noise pollution effect', 'water pollution effects'), incorrect prepositions ('cause by'), and awkward phrasing ('the waste of human life'). These errors are frequent and often cause difficulty for the reader in grasping the intended meaning. Control over punctuation and sentence boundaries is also weak, leading to a band score of 4.5.
