Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5
The response addresses all parts of the prompt by discussing both views on whether the loss of specific plant and animal species is the main environmental problem, alongside alternative issues like climate change and pollution, and clearly presents the writer's own opinion. The position is maintained throughout the essay. Ideas are generally relevant, such as mentioning the food chain and habitat destruction in the second paragraph, and climate change and pollution in the third. However, some arguments are slightly under-developed and would benefit from deeper elaboration or more precise supporting examples. Despite these limitations, the task is adequately addressed in line with the requirements for a Band 6.0 performance.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5
The essay displays a coherent overall arrangement with a clear four-paragraph structure that separates the introduction, the two body paragraphs discussing different views, and the conclusion. Logical progression is generally maintained, using transitional markers such as 'On the one hand', 'On the other hand', and 'In conclusion'. However, cohesion is sometimes faulty or mechanical. For instance, referencing and linking within sentences occasionally break down, as seen in awkward transitions like 'droughts beacuse there is no rain for ten to tweleve years, the cultivation land became a tension'. Paragraphing is used appropriately, but overall cohesion lacks the flexibility required for higher band levels.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.0
The student uses an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, attempting less common items such as 'ecosystem', 'deforestation', 'habitats', and 'cultivation land'. However, there are noticeable spelling errors throughout the text, including 'considerd', 'speices', 'belive', 'disappearence', 'bacome', 'distrub', 'proctecting', 'endengerd', 'countires', 'beacuse', 'facories', and 'environental'. Word choice and form inaccuracies also appear, such as 'they infected humans' instead of 'they affect humans', and 'cultivation land became a tension'. While these errors do not completely impede communication, they restrict the score to a Band 5.0.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
The writer attempts a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, incorporating subordinating clauses with 'although', 'because', and 'if'. However, grammatical accuracy is weak, with frequent errors in verb forms, tense consistency, and subject-verb agreement (e.g., 'climate change become a major obstacle', 'air pollution... can causes', 'they causes health problems', 'government should take action to solve the all environmental challenges'). Punctuation and comma splices also detract from the quality of the writing, such as running independent clauses together without proper conjunctions or full stops. These recurring errors occasionally cause difficulty for the reader.
