It is often argued that the present environmental problem is the extiction of specific species of plants and animals, while others believe that there are numerous other enviromental issues in the country such as air and water pollution, deforestation which needs to be addressed first. This essay will discuss both views before explaining why i think that pollution is currently the biggest problem the world is facing.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

The response addresses all parts of the prompt by discussing both views on environmental problems and clearly stating the writer's own opinion in the introduction. The position is maintained throughout the essay. The ideas presented are generally relevant, such as the discussion of biodiversity loss including kangaroos in Australia, as well as alternative issues like air and water pollution and deforestation. However, some arguments lack deeper extension and development, which is characteristic of a Band 6 performance. For instance, the point about kangaroos being kept in safe shelters is somewhat brief and could have been elaborated further to fully support the argument. Overall, the task response is competent and covers the prompt adequately, satisfying the requirements for Band 6.0.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The essay displays a coherent overall arrangement with a logical progression of ideas from the introduction to body paragraphs and the conclusion. Paragraphing is used appropriately, with distinct sections for the introduction, opposing viewpoints, and the final conclusion. However, cohesion at the sentence level is occasionally faulty or mechanical. For instance, transitions like 'On one hand' and 'On the other hand' are utilized, but some sentences lack smooth connective tissue, and referencing can be repetitive. There are also instances of punctuation and spacing issues after commas and periods (e.g., 'animals. These', 'pollution. For instance, disposal'), which slightly detracts from the flow. These features align well with the Band 6 descriptors for Coherence and Cohesion.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

The vocabulary used is adequate for the task, allowing the writer to convey their ideas clearly. The student attempts some less common lexical items such as 'biodiversity' or context-specific terms like 'deforestation', 'industrial waste', and 'extinct'. However, there are notable spelling errors ('extiction' instead of extinction, 'enviromental' instead of environmental, 'committes' instead of committees, 'Kangroos' instead of kangaroos, 'harmfull' instead of harmful, 'safegaurd' instead of safeguard) and minor word choice inaccuracies. These errors do not impede communication, as the reader can easily understand the intended meaning, but they prevent the score from reaching a higher band. This represents a solid Band 6 performance in Lexical Resource.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

The student uses a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, demonstrating some variety in sentence structures. Examples of complex structures include 'Although preserving plants and animals which are getting exinct is essential for environment...' and 'This essay will discuss both views before explaining why i think that pollution is currently the biggest problem...' However, there are frequent grammatical errors, such as subject-verb agreement issues ('deforestation which needs' instead of need, 'vehicle causing' instead of vehicles causing), missing articles ('on priority', 'safegaurd environment'), and capitalization errors ('i think'). Despite these errors, they rarely impede overall communication. The mix of structures combined with persistent errors places this response firmly at Band 6.0.
