Student answer (Band 5.0)
Well, the environmental problems are really concerning these days, whether it is through the extinct of any species of plant or animal or because of any other issue. In my opinion most of the environmental problems are the result of loss of biodiversity which means loss of a specie from our environment. Its affect the food chain of the organisms that is occurring naturally. When a specie of plant or animal distinct from the environment, the other specie depending on it have find other ways of food or for what they are depending on it. Let's suppose if there is a decrease in the concentration of herbs or plant in any tropical region because of any instance, the herbivorous animal in that region would slowly dying because there is a lake of enough nutrients to survive.
Some people doesn't possess the same opinion. They thought that the main reason for the environmental problem are the human itself. Because the factories we made release harmfull gases which absorb in the atmosphere and thus result in damaging the environment. For example, The waste of the industries in the form of Gasses such as carbon monoxide when release in the atmosphere, it combine with the ozone gass at the top of the atmosphere. This result in lessens the ozone particles from the upper layer. As ozone depletes, the devastating Ultravoilent rays coming from the sun directly reaches to earth. This result in increase in the temperature of earth and also cause skin cancer. Because of ozone depletion, Glaciers are melting away and it result in slowly increase in sea level.
In conclusion, I think the main issue to our environment is the loss of biodiversity. The extinct of a single specie result in the disturbance of whole biodiversity.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5
The response addresses both views required by the prompt—that the loss of species is the main environmental problem, and that other issues are more critical—while also stating the writer's own opinion. The position is clear throughout the essay. However, the development of ideas tends to be repetitive and somewhat simplistic. For instance, the discussion on biodiversity loss relies on a single hypothetical example of herbs and herbivores that is not fully elaborated, and the counter-argument focuses heavily on ozone depletion and pollution without broader exploration of other environmental crises like climate change generally. This places the performance firmly in Band 6, as all parts of the task are addressed, but some ideas remain under-developed.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.0
The essay displays a coherent overall arrangement with a clear attempt to structure the introduction, body paragraphs, and conclusion. Progression is visible, moving from the writer's view to the opposing view and back to the conclusion. However, paragraphing is somewhat problematic; the conclusion is squeezed onto the end of the second body paragraph without a proper line break, disrupting the visual and logical structure. Furthermore, cohesive devices are occasionally faulty or mechanical, such as the abrupt transitions ('Let's suppose', 'Some people doesn't') and repetitive referencing ('Because of ozone depletion, Glaciers are melting away and it result in slowly increase...'). These issues align with the Band 5 descriptors, as organization is evident, but cohesive devices are sometimes inaccurate and referencing is not always clear.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.0
The student uses an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, successfully incorporating terms such as 'biodiversity', 'herbivorous', 'concentration', and 'depletion'. However, there are numerous lexical errors and instances of incorrect word forms, such as 'extinct' instead of 'extinction', 'specie' instead of 'species', 'distinct' instead of 'become extinct', 'harmfull', and 'Gasses'. These inaccuracies occasionally cause strain for the reader, although communication remains generally clear. Because the vocabulary range is minimally adequate and contains frequent word-choice and morphological errors, a Band 5 is appropriate.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
The essay contains a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, demonstrating some ambition with conditional and relative clauses, such as 'When a specie of plant or animal distinct from the environment, the other specie depending on it have find other ways...'. However, grammatical accuracy is weak, with frequent errors in verb forms, subject-verb agreement, and prepositions ('Some people doesn't', 'is occurring', 'have find', 'when release', 'combine with'). Punctuation is also erratic in places. While simple sentences are often controlled, attempts at complex structures frequently result in errors that require the reader to decode the meaning. This performance fits the Band 5 descriptor profile.
