Student answer (Band 5.5)

It is often argued that the loss of various plant and animal habitats are main concern for enviromental problem, while other negate this argument. This essay will discuss both views and then i will give my opinion at the end of this essay.

Reduction in various kinds of plants and animals are major concern for the enviroment of our time because there are a wide range of plants that contains herbel properties that are very beneficial for the treatment of various hamfull diseases. On the other hand, animals are major part of our ecosystem, with the possible extinction of some animals put serious problems on the ecosystem, as it will negatively impact our ecosystem. For instance, chemicals extracted from various animals and plants are useful for various medical treatments.

However, problems that are associated with the enviroment possess various implications not only to humans but also plants and animals because enviromental problems like global warming and pollution are becoming a major concern for the globe, as it will impose detrimental effects on human and animals health. For instance, air pollution is becoming a major concern as it can cause serious diseases related to lungs for people, especially children. Furthermore, global warming is changing weather all over the world, which is putting in danger various species of pants and animals.

In conclusion, I believe that problems related to the enviroment should be taken seriously because by improving the quality of our enviroment will enable the plants and animals to survive in the enviroment.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

The response addresses both parts of the prompt regarding the loss of species versus broader environmental issues, and provides an opinion in the introduction and conclusion. However, the development of ideas is somewhat limited and repetitive. For instance, the discussion on plants and animals touches on medicinal and ecosystem values ('herbel properties', 'medicinal treatments'), but these points are underdeveloped and lack broader elaboration. The counter-argument introduces global warming and pollution, yet the specific examples, such as air pollution causing lung diseases in children, are brief and not fully connected back to the core debate. The position is discernible but could be stated with more clarity and precision throughout the essay. As a result, the performance aligns with the requirements for a Band 6.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The essay displays a coherent overall arrangement with a clear paragraph-by-paragraph structure, including an introduction, two body paragraphs, and a conclusion. Cohesive devices are used to signal transitions, such as 'On the other hand', 'However', and 'Furthermore'. However, referencing and cohesion are occasionally faulty or repetitive. For example, the transitional links between sentences sometimes feel mechanical, and the concluding sentence ('because by improving the quality of our enviroment will enable the plants and animals to survive in the enviroment') suffers from a grammatical flaw that disrupts the smooth flow of ideas. Paragraphing is present and appropriate, but overall logical progression can be improved. This corresponds to a Band 6 level.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.0

The vocabulary used is adequate for the task, allowing the writer to communicate main ideas about the environment, ecosystems, and pollution. There are attempts to use less common items such as 'ecosystem', 'extinction', and 'detrimental effects'. However, there are notable spelling errors ('enviroment', 'herbel', 'hamfull', 'plants' misspelled as 'pants' in one instance) and awkward word choices ('loss of various plant and animal habitats are main concern', 'contain herbel properties'). These lexical inaccuracies indicate a limited control over spelling and word formation, placing the response firmly at Band 5.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

The response demonstrates a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, attempting structures like conditional and relative clauses ('because there are a wide range of plants that contains herbel properties...'). However, grammatical accuracy is weak, with frequent errors in subject-verb agreement ('habitats are main concern', 'Reduction in various kinds... are major concern', 'plants that contains') and article usage. Punctuation and sentence boundary issues also appear, such as run-on constructions in the conclusion. While communication is not entirely impeded, the high frequency of grammatical errors prevents the response from reaching a higher band, aligning it with Band 5.
