Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.0

The response addresses the task only partially, presenting limited and under-developed ideas regarding the loss of species versus other environmental issues. While the prompt asks to discuss both views and give an opinion, the writer's position is not always clear and remains underdeveloped throughout the essay. For instance, the introduction states that the writer will discuss major problems along their causes and solutions, rather than clearly staking a claim on the relative importance of biodiversity loss versus other threats. In the body paragraphs, ideas such as ozone depletion being caused by plant loss or general references to global warming and acid rain are stated simply without adequate explanation, examples, or thorough extension. To reach a higher standard, the writer needs to present a well-developed position, ensure all parts of the prompt are explored in balanced depth, and fully support main ideas with specific explanations and relevant real-world examples.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.0

The essay displays some organization with an introductory paragraph, body paragraphs, and a concluding remark, but it lacks a clear overall progression. Paragraphing is somewhat inconsistent and abrupt, particularly with the division of ideas and spacing. Cohesive devices are used rather inadequately or inaccurately, and referencing is occasionally unclear, such as the pronoun use in 'To fulfill this purpose they have disturbed...'. Transitional phrases between the two opposing views are basic or missing, making the logical connection between paragraphs feel mechanical. To improve cohesion, the writer should employ a wider and more accurate range of cohesive markers to link sentences and paragraphs smoothly, ensure logical sequencing of arguments, and structure paragraphs with clear topic sentences and supporting details that build a coherent progression of thought.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.0

The vocabulary used is limited and minimally adequate for the task, with noticeable errors that occasionally cause difficulty for the reader. There are frequent word choice, word form, and spelling errors throughout the text, such as 'cutt off' instead of cut down, 'sherbs' instead of shrubs, 'addversly' instead of adversely, 'globalwarming' written as one word, and 'divaristy' instead of diversity. While the writer attempts less common vocabulary items like 'biodiversity' and 'extinct', inaccuracies in collocation and spelling constrain the precision of the writing. To achieve a higher band, the writer must expand their lexical repertoire, pay closer attention to word formation and spelling, and use vocabulary with greater accuracy and natural control in appropriate contexts.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

The writing demonstrates a limited range of grammatical structures, relying heavily on simple or awkwardly constructed sentences where attempts at complexity are frequently faulty. There are frequent grammatical errors in verb forms, tenses, subject-verb agreement, and articles, which can cause difficulty for the reader. Examples include 'there was less number of people', 'folks increase which result in', 'population have been increased', 'As whe know', and 'We also take steps'. Punctuation is also problematic, marked by missing spaces after full stops and comma splices. To progress to a higher level, the writer needs to incorporate a wider variety of complex sentence forms with good control, eliminate frequent errors in basic agreement and tense structures, and refine punctuation practices to ensure maximum clarity and readability.
