Student answer (Band 6.0)

Nowadays, conservation of a natural environment is very difficult because there are many endangered species relay on the edge of extinction. In this regard, some people argued that main environmental problem is the loss of particular species of natural habitat. I hold a strong belief that proper strategies should implement to conserve the plants and animals. This essay discusses both views before drawing a conclusion.

To begin with, there are several reasons to conserve the natural habitat. Firstly, although the loss is due to overpopulation, this a serious concern. For instance, the population is increasing day by day, therefore to fulfill the needs of population forests are transformed in to local societies. In this way, the natural resources are decreasing continuously that leads to extinction of animals and plants. To elaborate on this, the other reason is if one species become extinct it can effect other specie that depend on it for food and survival.

On the other hand, there are also other environmental problems that contributes equally including climate change and various types of pollution. For example, the climate change can cause flooding that leads to deforestation. The other contributing factor is pollution that have detrimental effects on environment. The sources of pollution are humans, vehicles and improper sewage system.

To conclusion, although the other important environmental problems have a negative impact on society, the loss of particular species of animals and plant are the major concern that leads to the loss of natural habitat. In my opinion, both are necessary for the conservation of environment, so a balanced approach is essential to maintain the healthier environment that will prove beneficial in the future.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

The response addresses all parts of the prompt by discussing both the loss of species and other environmental issues, alongside presenting a clear position. However, some ideas are more fully developed than others. For example, while the point regarding the interdependence of species in the second body paragraph is introduced, it is somewhat under-developed and lacks specific elaboration or clear examples. The conclusion also touches upon a balanced approach, yet the rationale could have been extended further. Nevertheless, the main views are acknowledged and discussed relevantly throughout the essay, fulfilling the core requirements of this level.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The essay demonstrates a coherent overall arrangement with a clear attempt at logical progression. Paragraphing is used adequately, separating the introduction, body paragraphs, and conclusion appropriately. Cohesive devices such as 'To begin with', 'On the other hand', and 'For instance' are employed to guide the reader through the arguments, though referencing and linking are occasionally mechanical or slightly awkward, which prevents the writing from achieving a higher level of fluid progression. For instance, the transition in 'To conclusion' displays faulty phrasing. Despite these minor issues, the general flow of ideas remains clear and easy to follow.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

The student displays an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, attempting some less common words and phrases such as 'endangered species', 'conservation', and 'detrimental effects'. However, there are noticeable inaccuracies in word choice, collocation, and word forms throughout the text. Examples include 'relay on the edge of extinction' instead of 'lying', 'main environmental problem' missing an article, and 'maintain the healthier environment' where the comparative form is inappropriate. Additionally, there are minor lexical slips like 'effect' instead of the verb 'affect', and the phrase 'To conclusion' rather than 'In conclusion'. These errors do not impede overall communication but highlight limitations in precise lexical control.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

The writer uses a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, demonstrating attempts at subordination with structures like 'although the loss is due to overpopulation' and 'if one species become extinct'. However, there are several errors in grammar and punctuation, including subject-verb agreement issues such as 'species become' and 'pollution that have', missing articles like 'the main environmental problem', and prepositional inaccuracies such as 'forests are transformed in to'. Complex sentences often contain minor structural flaws. Fortunately, these errors rarely impede communication and the reader can readily understand the intended meaning, reflecting a typical mix of error types found at this level.
