IELTS Writing Task 2 question
Some people say that the main environmental problem of our time is the loss of particular species of plants and animals. Others say that there are more important environmental problems.
Discuss both these views and give your own opinion.
Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.
Student answer (Band 6.0)
People have different opinions while discussing about the main enviromental problem whether its loss of species and animals or other envirometal catastrophes that eventually causes the eviction of the plants and species.
On one hand, it is important to care about the loss of particular species of plant and animals, as it is through them the whole food chain is dependent on. So, it is very important that we create an enviroment that important species does not get extinct.
However, it is important to understand the underlying reasoning of these extinctions. Therfore, when we explore the more important enviromental problems, it includes: urban flooding, global warming, forest fires, air pollution, water scarcity and etc. And all of these are stemmed from use of non renewable energy sources, the rise of urbanisation, overexploitation i.e. hunting animals, global warming caused due to climate change as forests are removed and large factories and industries are been set up.
Thus, I believe the loss of particular species of plant and animals is the by product of enviromental crisis, so we should at first work towards a more greener earth and helthy enviroment by ensuring that we mitigate the enviromental crises by transitioning to renewable energy sources for eg, solar panels, signing the MOU's on world forums such as Paris Agreement, to ensure that the emission of carbondioxide and other toxins is extremely limited. Further, there should be awareness amongst the populations about the increasing enviromental challenges, as one good thing done by a single individual carries it's influrnce towards others i.e. planting one tree by every person, will eventually lead to gazillion of trees, which shall contribute positively to the enviroment.
To conclude, no enviromental problem is small or big, every challenge is equally deterimental and it should be faced with resilience and should be mitigated at its earliest.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0
The response addresses all parts of the task by discussing both views on whether the loss of species is the main environmental problem or if other crises are more critical, and a clear personal position is presented in the conclusion and body paragraphs. However, some ideas are more fully developed than others. For instance, the discussion on the food chain in the second paragraph is somewhat superficial and lacks extension with concrete examples. The student identifies relevant broader problems like urban flooding and global warming, but these ideas would benefit from deeper elaboration to fully satisfy higher band expectations. The overall position is clear throughout, but the depth of support for each viewpoint remains uneven.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0
The essay presents a coherent overall arrangement with a discernible progression of ideas from discussing species loss to examining broader environmental issues, and finally synthesizing a personal stance. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate main ideas, such as dedicating the second body paragraph to underlying causes and wider problems. However, cohesion is sometimes mechanical or faulty, as seen in repetitive transitional phrases like 'It is important to' and the overuse of 'and etc.', which disrupts the natural flow. Referencing is occasionally unclear, such as the pronoun use in 'carries it's influrnce towards others', which detracts from smooth information tracking.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
The vocabulary used is adequate for the task, successfully communicating the writer's ideas despite noticeable slips in word choice and spelling. The student attempts less common vocabulary such as 'overexploitation', 'mitigate', and 'resilience', showing an awareness of topic-specific terminology. However, there are frequent errors in spelling and word form, including 'enviromental', 'Therfore', 'helthy', and 'influrnce', alongside slight awkwardness in phrasing such as 'a more greener earth'. While these lexical inaccuracies do not seriously impede communication, they highlight the need for greater precision and care in word selection and orthography.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
The writing displays a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, demonstrating attempts at subordination and relative clauses, such as in 'transitioning to renewable energy sources for eg, solar panels'. There are some errors in grammar, punctuation, and article usage throughout the text, including subject-verb agreement issues ('large factories and industries are been set up', 'planting one tree by every person, will eventually lead'), missing articles, and awkward punctuation placement. Fortunately, these errors rarely impede communication and the intended meaning remains mostly clear to the reader, though a tighter control over complex structures is needed for a higher score.
