Student answer (Band 6.0)
Environmental problems are very concerning due to their nrgative impacts on human and animal life. Some people believe that loss of particular species of plants and animals is the most concerning issue, while the others argue that there are a number of other problems which are more important. From my perspective, the loss of endangered species of plants and animals is alarming, however, matters like global warming are more important.
Global warming is a major environmental problem and a number of things contribute to it. Heavy industries and cars release a number of impurities in the atmosphere which abrupts the ozone layer and this results in a lower deflection of ultravoilet rays. This causes the global temprature to rise and glaciers melt quickly. As a result natural disasters like floods occur. Floods cause great destructions and one of the most recent examples is Nepal where flash flood caused great loss. A large number of people lost their lives while others lost their fortune.
On the other hand, the loss of endangered species of plants and animals is caused often due to deforestation. A large number of trees are cut every year to meet industrial needs but this results in the loss of habitat for animals and for plants. Deforestation contributes to global warming and as a result environmental conditions get worse for endangered plants or animals. This has lead to the loss of some of the most rare kinds of animals and plants and they have become extinct.
In conclusion, Global warming is a more concerning environmental problem as compared to loss of endangered animals or plants, however, the loss of endangered species can not be ignored.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5
The response addresses all parts of the task by discussing both views on environmental problems and presenting a clear position throughout. For example, the student states their view in the introduction that while endangered species are alarming, global warming is more important, and reiterates this in the conclusion. However, some ideas are more fully developed than others. The discussion on global warming and its causes is extended with examples such as Nepal, but the arguments regarding the loss of plant and animal species are somewhat underdeveloped and could be elaborated further with specific consequences of biodiversity loss to fully bridge into higher bands.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5
The text presents a coherent overall arrangement with a clear, logical progression of ideas from the introduction through body paragraphs to a distinct conclusion. Paragraphing is used appropriately, with each main body paragraph tackling a separate viewpoint. Cohesive devices are employed to connect sentences, such as 'On the other hand' and 'In conclusion', though referencing and transitions can occasionally feel a bit mechanical or repetitive. To achieve higher bands, the student could employ a wider variety of cohesive relationships and ensure smoother transitions between sentences within paragraphs.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
The writer demonstrates an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, successfully attempting less common items such as 'endangered species', 'deforestation', and 'extinct'. However, there are noticeable spelling errors, such as 'nrgative', 'abrupts' instead of 'disrupts', 'ultravoilet', and 'temprature', along with minor word-choice inaccuracies like 'loss of their fortune'. These lexical slips and spelling errors do not impede communication, placing the response firmly at this level. To improve, the student needs to expand their range of less common vocabulary and pay closer attention to spelling and precise word collocation.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0
The response exhibits a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, demonstrating attempts at subordination with structures like 'Some people believe that...' and 'while the others argue that...'. There are some errors in grammar and punctuation, such as 'This has lead' instead of 'led', missing articles, and occasional awkward phrasing, but these errors rarely impede communication and the majority of simple sentences are clear. To reach a higher band, the student should increase the frequency of error-free complex sentences and ensure greater accuracy in verb forms and tense consistency.
