Student answer (Band 6.0)
There is an ongoing debate about factors which are responsible for environmental problem. some individuals believe that animals and plants are the one who balance the ecosystem. However, due to technological advancement some species are going to loss. While, other believe that there are other factors for environmental concerns. Both the view will be discussed before giving my opinion in the following paragraphs.
Some people argue that extinction of particular species of plants and animals are major concerns in terms of environment. As they are the part of ecosystems and play major role in environment. If one affects, the entire ecosystem will be disturbed. For example, declination of bee's population who are pollinators reducing in the pollination which leads to decreasing in food production. Furthermore, the loss of biodiversity often irreversible. For example, medicinal plants play important role for the healthy life of people.
Consequently, there are more other environmental problems such as climate change, pollution which affects human life as well as wildlife. Air and water are the basic need for surviving. However, both are polluted because of technological advancement and rapid growing industries. That creates health problem for human and also having about marine ecosystem, and also increases the scarcity of drinkable water. For example, large ship and industry dump their waste into ocean because of that ocean water contaminated. As a results purification of water system is difficult and marine ecosystem is disturbed.
In conclusion, although extinction of plants and animal species is serious environmental problem, climate change and pollution are more important issues due to it affects human and animal lives.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5
The response addresses all parts of the task by discussing both views—the loss of species and other environmental problems—and provides a clear personal opinion in the introduction and conclusion, successfully reaching the level expected for a solid intermediate performance. Main ideas are relevant, such as mentioning the decline of pollinators and the impact of pollution on marine life, reflecting features of the next band. However, some ideas remain under-developed rather than fully extended. For instance, the discussion on medicinal plants and the mention of climate change are introduced briefly without sufficient supporting elaboration or specific examples. To reach a higher level, all main arguments need to be thoroughly expanded with deeper explanations and more comprehensive examples throughout every body paragraph.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5
The essay presents a coherent overall arrangement with a clear logical progression from introducing the topic, through discussing both views in separate paragraphs, to concluding. Paragraphing is used sufficiently and appropriately to separate distinct themes. Cohesive devices are employed to guide the reader, such as 'For example', 'Furthermore', and 'In conclusion', which align with the characteristics of this band level. Nevertheless, cohesion is at times mechanical or somewhat faulty, as seen with transitional phrases like 'Consequently,' which is used inappropriately to introduce a new separate environmental concern rather than a logical consequence of the previous paragraph. To progress further, referencing and inter-sentence relationships need to be managed more fluidly, ensuring that transitional markers accurately reflect the logical connection between ideas.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.0
The vocabulary used is adequate for the task, successfully conveying the intended meaning regarding environmental issues. The writer attempts less common vocabulary items such as 'biodiversity', 'ecosystem', 'extinction', and 'pollinators', which demonstrates an effort to use topic-specific terminology. However, there are noticeable inaccuracies in word choice, form, and collocation, such as writing 'are the one who balance' instead of 'balance', 'due to technological advancement some species are going to loss' instead of 'loss', and 'declination of bee's population' instead of 'decline'. Spelling and word-choice errors occur, such as 'rapid growing' instead of 'rapidly growing', but these do not impede communication. To achieve a higher score, a wider range of vocabulary must be used with greater precision and fewer errors in word derivation and collocation.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
The writing displays a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, attempting structures like conditional clauses ('If one affects, the entire ecosystem will be disturbed') and relative clauses. However, there are frequent errors in grammar and punctuation that restrict the score. These include issues with articles ('the main environmental problem', 'play important role'), pluralisation ('Both the view', 'plant and animal species'), verb forms and tense consistency ('declination... who are pollinators reducing in the pollination', 'due to it affects'), and prepositions. While the meaning remains generally decipherable despite these frequent errors, sentences containing complex structures often contain faults. To improve, the writer needs to demonstrate better control over basic grammatical patterns, subject-verb agreement, and accurate punctuation to ensure that error-free sentences become more frequent.
