Student answer (Band 6.0)

While some believe that the primary problem of today's environment is losing specific category of plants or animals, others are of the opinion that there are more crucial problems of the environment. Although climate change can be one of the important issues, I am more convinced that extinction of certain plans and animals will severly impact the ecosystem.

On the one hand, climate change is a serious issue and can have devastating impact on the environment. Cases such as increase of the normal daily temperature or change in the weather condition in short period of time can be seen throughout the world. Focusing on these types of changes are crucial because if preventive measures are not taken then the impact by such weather changes can seriously impact the life on earth. For example, if people do not care about climate change then the consequences can decline the population of all the living organisms of earth.

On the other hand, losing specific type of plants and animals is more impactful because some of the organisms are part of the nature's lifecycle and losing those members can have negative consequences. In today's time, priority should be give for this issue as these organisms are required for the functioning of nature and the absence of those beings can distrub the nature's life cycle. For example, bees are required for pollination and the production of plants and if bees are lost from our environment then every living organisms dependent on plants can face extinction.

In conclusion, climate change is one of the environmental problems, I believe that loss of certain plants are animals should be our main priority.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

The response addresses all parts of the task by discussing both views—climate change versus biodiversity loss—and providing a clear personal opinion. The position is maintained throughout the essay. However, some ideas are more fully developed than others; for instance, the body paragraph on climate change tends to rely on general statements without specific concrete examples, repeating the core premise rather than extending it deeply. The argument regarding bees and pollination in the third paragraph is better developed and clearly supports the writer's stance. To reach a higher level, all supporting points would need equally thorough extension and specific illustration.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The essay presents a coherent overall arrangement with a clear logical progression from introduction to body paragraphs and a concluding summary. Paragraphing is used appropriately, with each main body paragraph focusing on a distinct view. Cohesive devices are employed to link ideas, such as 'On the one hand', 'On the other hand', and 'For example', though referencing and transitions can occasionally feel a bit mechanical or repetitive. For instance, the conclusion slightly echoes previous phrases rather than smoothly synthesising the arguments. Clearer logical flow and more flexible referencing would elevate the cohesion of the response.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

The writer demonstrates an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, successfully attempting less common items such as 'biodiversity' concepts, 'ecosystem', and 'pollination'. However, there are notable word choice, spelling, and word form errors throughout the text that prevent it from achieving a higher band. Examples include spelling errors like 'severly' instead of severely, grammatical word form slips such as 'certain plans' instead of plants, and awkward phrasing like 'priority should be give for this issue'. These lexical inaccuracies occasionally draw attention, although they do not seriously impede communication.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

The response employs a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, demonstrating control over relative clauses and conditional structures, such as 'if people do not care about climate change then the consequences can decline...'. There are some errors in grammar and punctuation, including missing articles ('priority should be give', 'nature's lifecycle'), preposition choices, and slight agreement issues ('every living organisms dependent'), but these errors rarely impede communication and the meaning remains clear. To achieve a higher score, the writer would need to produce a greater frequency of error-free sentences using a wider variety of sophisticated structures with consistent accuracy.
