IELTS Writing Task 2 question

Some people say that the main environmental problem of our time is the loss of particular species of plants and animals. Others say that there are more important environmental problems.

Discuss both these views and give your own opinion.

Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.

Student answer (Band 5.5)

some people say due to the loss of plants and animals in the environment causes serious problem and some people say there are other problems.

Plants and animals maintained a biodivesity in a way that the environment do not face any problems which includes flood, pollution, and major environmental factors. If we grown plants every where, the temperature will be maintained and there is less air pollution. At present, heat waves are major issue in many countries and due to plants and trees we are capable to control these heat waves.

Some other important factors which affects our environment are different kinds of pollutions such as noise pollution, air pollution, water pollution, and green house effect. Air pollution harm our envirnment and cause many diseases related to breathing and its main cause is smoke which is produced by different vehicles. Water pollution come from different industries which throws their industrial waste in the rivers and it also affect the aquatic life. Due to the green house effect, temperature is increasing fastly.

Many forests are cleared to make housing societies there which have a very negative impact on the environment because it eroded many species habitat and cutting forest affect weather by increasing temperature.

To conclude, I think it should be goood if we work on both factors because if we want to get rid of these problems we have to think with every aspect. We are able to control these serious problems by inventing new technologies or by maintaining the environment clear.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5

You address both views by explaining why species loss matters and by discussing pollution and climate-related problems, then give a position that both areas deserve attention. Examples such as trees helping to moderate heat and industrial waste harming aquatic life are relevant. However, the discussion is only partly developed: the first view is mainly presented through general claims about plants and trees, with little explanation of why the loss of particular species is especially serious. Your conclusion also says we should work on “both factors” without clearly weighing their relative importance. To strengthen the response, explain the consequences of biodiversity loss more specifically and make your own judgement explicit throughout.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5

The response has a recognisable overall structure: an introduction, paragraphs on environmental concerns, and a concluding opinion. The paragraph about air and water pollution groups related examples, and phrases such as “Some other important factors” help signal a shift. However, progression between ideas is not always clear. The discussion of forest clearance appears after the pollution paragraph without a clear link to either view, and the opening sentence is difficult to follow. Connections such as “both factors” are also vague because the reader must infer which factors you mean. Use clearer topic sentences, organise each paragraph around one side of the debate, and link examples explicitly to your argument.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use a relevant range of environmental vocabulary, including “biodiversity,” “air pollution,” “industrial waste,” “aquatic life,” and “greenhouse effect.” These terms help communicate the topic, although some are repeated and several combinations are inaccurate or imprecise, such as “maintained a biodiversity” and “work on both factors.” Spelling errors, including “biodivesity,” “envirnment,” and “fastly,” are noticeable and reduce the accuracy of the vocabulary. Aim to use common environmental collocations consistently and check spelling carefully. More precise wording would also help distinguish species extinction from broader environmental problems rather than relying on general terms such as “serious problems.”

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

You attempt both simple and more complex sentences, including clauses beginning with “because” and “which,” but control is inconsistent. The opening, “some people say due to the loss … causes serious problem,” has a faulty sentence structure, while “Plants and animals maintained a biodiversity … the environment do not face” contains problems with tense and subject–verb agreement. Other examples include “Air pollution harm” and “Water pollution come,” where singular subjects require singular verbs. Articles and plurals are also sometimes missing or inaccurate. These errors can make relationships between ideas harder to follow. Practise building accurate subject–verb–object sentences first, then add subordinate clauses and check agreement, tense, and articles.
