IELTS Writing Task 2 question
Some people say that the main environmental problem of our time is the loss of particular species of plants and animals. Others say that there are more important environmental problems.
Discuss both these views and give your own opinion.
Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.
Student answer (Band 5.0)
environment problem is caused due to loss of plants and animals because peoples cut trees in order to make different socities and used trees to make papers. there are many agriculture lands that are just demolished due to pakistan housing authorities.on the other hand smoke from cars, factoories and mills contribute to major environmental problems . generally factories and mills release their waste water into river and smoke into air which cause a major problem to human and aquatic healths . to illustrate this a chemical mill near my city release their waste water into canal which in results come many fish death and flout on river . from my perspective over government take action and keep an eyes on these socities developers and make insure that agriculture land is not used for housing socities we considered making apartments building for living not big land . demolished the trees will ultimately cause air polutions . to illustrate this in previos eyes there are more cold temperature as compared to nowadats because plant is a source oxygen and also food . I appreciate our to make a department EPA ( Environment Protection Authority) which prohibit the release of smoke in air . they are also survilence of cars and give a EPA certificate which means this car is safe for ride. they also ban use of plastic . plastic is not degradable material which remains after a years. i recently get a news that EPA seal bricks kiln who release smoke in environment without being clean

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5
You address both views: the opening refers to the loss of plants and animals, while the discussion of factory smoke and wastewater presents other environmental problems. You also give a personal position, especially when recommending government action and protection of farmland. The example of fish dying after a mill discharged wastewater helps make the second view relevant. However, the response does not clearly compare which problem is more important, and your opinion is difficult to identify consistently: the conclusion-like recommendations focus on several solutions rather than directly answering the question. The points about species loss and plastic are also only briefly explained. Develop each view with a clear reason and example, then state explicitly which environmental problem you consider most serious and why.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 4.0
There is an attempt to organise the response using signals such as “on the other hand,” “from my perspective,” and “to illustrate this,” and the ideas generally relate to environmental concerns. However, the response is presented as one continuous paragraph, so the two views, your opinion, and supporting examples are not clearly separated. Some links are difficult to follow, particularly “which in results come many fish death and flout on river,” and “to illustrate this in previos eyes” does not make the relationship between the example and the point clear. Several ideas shift quickly from habitat loss to housing, temperature, the EPA, plastic, and kilns. Use separate paragraphs for each view and your position, and make each linking phrase introduce a clear, directly related explanation.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.0
You use relevant environmental vocabulary, including “agriculture lands,” “waste water,” “aquatic,” “oxygen,” and “degradable material,” and the local canal example gives some specificity. However, the range is limited and several word choices or spellings make meaning harder to understand. For example, “flout on river” is unclear, “socities” is repeatedly used where “housing developments” is intended, and “air polutions” and “survilence” are inaccurate forms. Some phrases are also unnatural, such as “make insure” and “release their waste water.” Build a more precise set of topic collocations and check spelling and word forms. More accurate choices such as “discharge wastewater into a river” would make your ideas clearer and more appropriate for an academic essay.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
You attempt to connect ideas in longer sentences, for example by explaining that factories release wastewater and smoke, and by using “because” to give a reason. However, the range of sentence structures is limited, and errors occur frequently enough to make some sentences difficult to follow. Subject–verb agreement is often inaccurate (“factories and mills release … which cause”); verb forms and tense are also problematic (“a chemical mill … release” and “I recently get a news”). Articles, plurals, and sentence boundaries need attention, as in “a major problem to human and aquatic healths.” Practise building clear subject–verb sentences first, then add subordinate clauses with accurate agreement and tense. Consistent capitalisation and full stops would also help readers follow the argument.
