IELTS Writing Task 2 question

Some people say that the main environmental problem of our time is the loss of particular species of plants and animals. Others say that there are more important environmental problems.

Discuss both these views and give your own opinion.

Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.

Student answer (Band 6.0)

Nowadays, there are rising environmental issues. And thereby, different people have distinct views on the most concerning part of environmental problems. For instance, some people believe that animal extinction is the most concerning issue, while other people think that, other problems faced due to environmental shifts are more serious. And hence, In my essay, I have discussed about both views.

Firstly, people believe that loss of some animal species as the most concerning part of environmental changes. And this can be true, because animals extinction due to shifts in environment they live in or due to excess hunting of them, can break the long food chains of different animal species. And therefore, this breakage of food chain can create negative effects onto complete ecological order.

On the other hand, some people concieve animals life loss as of little importance and rather, believe other environmental problems as more concerning. For instance, they argue that climate change is creating devastation across the world, since it increases the global temperature level. And they say, that due to rise of temperature , glaciers around the world are melting at the highest ever pace, which eventually rises up the sea levels. Hence, the increased sea levels, bring in the threat of urban flooding, which not only affects housing colonies, but also takes human lives across the developing countries eg; pakistan.

In my opinion, there are more concerning issues of environmental changes eg- Global climatic change, than of loss of animals lives. Since, the cliamte change has direct impact on most of the poeple, through either loss of their materalistic things or loss of their loved ones in some cases.

To conclude, both the views, have significant sensible support. But in my opinion the other issue

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

You address both views and state your own position: you explain that species loss can disrupt food chains, then contrast this with climate change and its effects on glaciers, sea levels and people. These are relevant reasons, and the Pakistan example helps make the second view concrete. However, the two sides are not developed equally: the species-loss argument is brief, and the conclusion ends with “the other issue” without completing your final judgement. Your opinion is clear in the body, but it would be stronger if you explained more precisely why climate change is the greater concern and how it relates to biodiversity loss. Develop each main point with a fuller explanation or example, and finish with a complete conclusion.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The response has a recognisable overall structure, moving from an introduction to the two opposing views, your opinion and a conclusion. Paragraphing helps the reader follow this progression, and links such as “Firstly” and “On the other hand” signal the change in viewpoint. However, cohesion is sometimes mechanical: repeated sentence openings with “And” and frequent “Hence” or “therefore” make the connections feel formulaic. Some references are also unclear, particularly “the other issue” at the end, which leaves the conclusion incomplete. Try linking ideas through their meaning rather than relying on repeated transition words, and ensure each paragraph develops one clear point before moving on.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use a relevant range of environmental vocabulary, including “animal extinction,” “food chains,” “climate change,” “glaciers” and “sea levels,” which allows you to discuss both sides of the question. There are also attempts at more formal phrasing, such as “ecological order” and “devastation.” However, several word choices and collocations are inaccurate or unnatural, including “environmental shifts,” “breakage of food chain,” “rise up the sea levels” and “loss of animals lives.” Spelling errors such as “concieve,” “cliamte” and “poeple” also reduce accuracy. Aim for precise, natural combinations and proofread carefully; this will make your ideas clearer and more fluent.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You attempt a mix of simple and complex sentences, including cause-and-effect structures with “because,” “since” and “which,” and most of your meaning remains understandable. Some grammatical errors nevertheless recur. For example, “people believe that loss of some animal species as” lacks a suitable verb construction, while “animals extinction” and “the increased sea levels, bring” show problems with articles, number and agreement. Commas are also used inconsistently, and sentence fragments beginning “And thereby” or “And hence” weaken control. Practise building complete sentences with accurate subject–verb patterns, and check articles, plurals and punctuation. More reliable control of these structures would make your complex sentences easier to follow.
