IELTS Writing Task 2 question

Some people say that the main environmental problem of our time is the loss of particular species of plants and animals. Others say that there are more important environmental problems.

Discuss both these views and give your own opinion.

Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.

Student answer (Band 6.5)

Environmental problem has become a leading global challenge in these days with some people arguing the extinction of few plants and animals species, while others are concerned about other significant widespread challanges arising out of environmental issues. Although the concerns regarding disappearance of some plants and animals species do hold its weight, but there are far reaching consequences of environmental issues that need to be addressed in my opinion.

Those who consider the major environmental issue as loss of few plants and animals species think this way because they are more likely to be observed in our daily routine. One may have grown up listening to the chirping of some birds that do not appear in the sky anymore. Similarly, a gardener may have noticed some plant species that do not grow anymore. There might be some species whose extinction may have left their predators with no food and a cascade effect in such a manner may have initiated. So, some people these days do not find those plants and birds anymore which they were attracted to in their childhoods.

The main environmental problems, however, include global warming and climate change. These problems have directly impacted the lives of each individual in one way or the other. The global warming, for example have raised temperature of many cities by few degrees and rendered them unlivable. Households are reporting higher energy costs in summers as more energy is now required to cool down houses and glaciers are melting more rapidly than they used to be in the past resulting in flash floods and cultivation losses. The climate change have also occured in parallel to the global warming. Summer and winter seasons have become more intense due to abnormal rainfall and snowfall patterns. Cities get covered in smog during winters due to fog now mixed with smoke and thus contributing towards health issues.

Conclusively, environmental problems are not restricted to the disappearance of few plants and animals species. It, in fact, is directly affecting the lives of every individual in diverse ways, thus endangring the existence of mankind on this planet.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0

You address both views and make your own position clear: species loss matters, but broader environmental problems have more direct consequences for people. The discussion of disappearing birds and plants explains why this loss is noticeable, while the examples of heat, melting glaciers, floods, and smog support your view. This fits a response that covers the task and extends its ideas with relevant support. To strengthen the development further, explain more precisely how species loss affects ecosystems—for example, how losing a species can disrupt food chains—rather than relying mainly on personal observation. The claims that cities have become “unlivable” and that climate change threatens mankind are also broad; qualifying or supporting them would make the argument more convincing.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0

The essay has a clear four-part structure: an introduction, one paragraph for each view, and a conclusion. The progression from the more visible effects of species loss to the wider effects of climate change is easy to follow. Linking expressions such as “Similarly,” “however,” and “for example” help signal relationships between ideas, and the conclusion returns to your central position. Some connections could be more precise: “The climate change have also occured in parallel to the global warming” repeats the preceding point without clearly showing how the ideas relate. The first body paragraph also moves from personal observations to a possible cascade effect without fully connecting the example to the claim. Use clearer transitions and develop each paragraph’s central point before moving on.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.5

You use a suitable range of topic vocabulary, including “extinction,” “cascade effect,” “global warming,” “glaciers,” and “abnormal rainfall and snowfall patterns.” These choices allow you to discuss both biodiversity and climate-related impacts, and the meaning remains clear. There is also some attempt at more precise phrasing, such as “rendered them unlivable.” However, several word-choice and collocation errors reduce naturalness: “leading global challenge in these days,” “loss of few plants and animals species,” and “cultivation losses” are awkward or imprecise. Spelling errors such as “challanges,” “occured,” and “endangring” also limit accuracy. Aim for more natural collocations and check spelling and word forms carefully; this would build on the adequate range already shown.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

You use a mix of simple and complex structures, including a concessive opening (“Although the concerns…”) and longer sentences explaining consequences. Most ideas remain understandable, and the sentence patterns are varied enough to support the discussion. Some grammatical errors persist, particularly with agreement, articles, and plural forms. For example, “The global warming…have raised” and “The climate change have” require singular verb agreement, while “loss of few plants and animals species” has problems with the article and plural construction. The opening “Although… but…” also combines two contrasting structures unnecessarily. Review subject–verb agreement and article use, and divide some long sentences so that each clause is controlled accurately. Greater consistency would make the complex sentences more reliable.
