IELTS Writing Task 2 question

Some people say that the main environmental problem of our time is the loss of particular species of plants and animals. Others say that there are more important environmental problems.

Discuss both these views and give your own opinion.

Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.

Student answer (Band 6.0)

In the current times there has been extinction of multiple species of plants and animals due to modernization, climate change and pollution. Many people argue that this extinction might be the main environmental hazard of this era. Others however counter this argument by saying that there are more crucial environmental problems around us.

Firstly, the loss of these particular species of plants and animals is indeed a huge environmental problem if not the main environmental problem. The natural lifecycle has been relying on these particular species for million of years. Many species of plants that have been lost played an important part in order to create a habitat for the other living organisms, which is now disturbed and has effected the lifecycle of many living organisms. The loss of animals has also disturbed the lifecycle and the food cycle of other animals resulting in a disturbed food cycle for humans.

However, there are also some other important environmental problems that highly effect the human life on our planet, global warming being the most important and urgent one of them. Global warming is the biggest environmental problem of our time as with time the increase in temprature has disturbed the life around the globe. With the increasing tempratures many places have become inhabitual for humans and animals living there, this has also played a major role in the loss of particular species of plants and animals with time. Due to global warming many forests became hotter, humid and inhabitable for many species of animals and plants living there as plants and animals are sensitive to the living conditions like temprature and air quality. Due to global warming many penguins have lost there home as the ice is melting in the arctic regions as the temprature increases.

In my opinioin the loss of rare and particular species of plants and animals is an important environmental problem of our time but there are other more important and critical envirionmental problems like global warming that are also the reasons of the extinction of these species.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

You address both views and give a clear opinion: species loss is serious, but global warming is more urgent and also contributes to extinction. The discussion is relevant, with examples such as disrupted food chains and melting Arctic ice. This meets the task well, though the two sides are not developed equally: the case for species loss is explained mainly through broad claims about habitats and food cycles, while the global-warming paragraph gives more detail. Some claims, such as places becoming “inhabitual,” would benefit from a precise example or explanation. To strengthen the response further, develop the consequences of biodiversity loss and support your comparison with a specific, accurate example. The response also meets the stated length requirement; nine words copied from the prompt were excluded from the count.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The essay has a clear overall structure: an introduction presents the debate, separate paragraphs discuss each view, and the conclusion states your position. Transitions such as “Firstly,” “However,” and “In my opinion” make the progression easy to follow. This is a coherent arrangement, although some linking is repetitive or mechanical, particularly the repeated use of “Due to global warming” in the final body paragraph. Connections between ideas could also be made more explicit: for example, explain how the loss of species affects humans rather than moving quickly from disrupted food cycles to human food cycles. Use clearer referencing and vary transitions so that the relationships between causes, effects, and comparisons are easier to track.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use relevant topic vocabulary, including “extinction,” “habitat,” “food cycle,” and “global warming,” so the main ideas are understandable. There are also attempts at more specific environmental language. However, the range and control are uneven, with repeated wording such as “particular species,” “environmental problem,” and “disturbed.” Several inaccurate or awkward choices reduce precision: “inhabitual” does not fit the intended meaning, and “effected the lifecycle” uses the wrong form for the intended verb. Spelling errors such as “temprature,” “opinioin,” and “envirionmental” are noticeable. Build a more varied set of accurate collocations and check spelling carefully; this will make your argument sound more precise and natural.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, including clauses of cause and result, as in “as the ice is melting in the arctic regions as the temprature increases.” Most ideas remain understandable, and the essay’s sentence structures allow you to explain relationships between environmental problems. Some grammatical errors persist, however. For example, “for million of years” needs a plural form, and “many forests became” is inconsistent with the surrounding present-perfect discussion. The long sentence beginning “With the increasing tempratures” also contains several clauses that are difficult to control, while the final sentence would be clearer with more accurate punctuation and structure. Aim for varied sentences, but divide overloaded sentences and check agreement, articles, and verb forms.
