IELTS Writing Task 2 question
Some people say that the main environmental problem of our time is the loss of particular species of plants and animals. Others say that there are more important environmental problems.
Discuss both these views and give your own opinion.
Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.
Student answer (Band 6.0)
It is argued by some people that the most recent issue is extension endangering of animals and plant species. While, others believe that there are some critical issues than these. From my point of view, several other problems that are threatning the survival of human beings on planet are needed to be considered more critically.
On one hand, the people living on Earth are facing a variety of problems. These include contaminated water, greenhouse concentrations, polluted air, floods and noise pollution. These are many factors involved in these problems like higher consumption of fuel, greenhouse gasses and industrial revolution. These processses are continuously polluting the environment and causing chronic diseases in humans. I believe that the problems that a human is facing nowadys are most serious factors effecting the survivial of mankind on Earth.
On the other hand, deforestation, forest fires, poaching, urbanization are resulting in deforestation which is leading to the threat of animals in forest. Due to these reasons, many animal species are rare and extinct. For Instance, the most recent specie, Indian sparrow is rare nowadays. Moreover, many plant species can not be grown in many countries. Likewise, the mango plant can only grow in specific areas of Pakistan which is then transported to other cities and exported.
Keeping in mind all these key points, it is clear that the world is becoming worst place for humans, animals and plants day by day. To overcome these circumstances, there is a need to take measurements. Aforestation, reforestation, reduction of poaching can bring substantial changes in wildlife survival. Moreover, transferring the industries away from towns, preventing greenhouses and increasing the use of public transport can decrease the pollution and can lead to better survival of human beings on Earth.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0
You address both views and give a clear opinion: you argue that broader threats to human survival deserve greater attention, while also discussing species loss. The examples of pollution and habitat destruction are relevant, and you suggest responses such as reforestation and reducing poaching. However, the two sides are not developed equally. The discussion of wider environmental problems lists several issues but gives little explanation of how they compare in seriousness with species loss. The Indian sparrow example is also unclear, and the mango example concerns where a plant can grow rather than the loss of a species. Develop each view with a specific, accurate example and explain why it supports your argument.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0
The response has a recognisable structure: an introduction, separate paragraphs for the two views, and a concluding paragraph with recommendations. This makes the overall line of discussion easy to follow. You also use signposts such as “On one hand,” “On the other hand,” and “Moreover” to guide the reader. At times, however, the links between ideas are mechanical or unclear. For example, “These are many factors involved in these problems like…” does not clearly connect the listed problems to their causes, and the conclusion shifts from comparing the views to solutions without explicitly restating which problem you consider more important. Use clearer cause-and-effect links and make the relationship between each example and your main argument explicit.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
You use a relevant range of environmental vocabulary, including “greenhouse concentrations,” “deforestation,” “poaching,” “urbanization,” and “reforestation.” These terms help keep the response focused on the topic. However, several word choices and collocations are inaccurate or awkward, which limits precision: “extension endangering” does not express species extinction clearly, “greenhouse concentrations” is vague, and “take measurements” is not the natural phrase for taking action. There are also spelling errors, including “threatning,” “survivial,” and “nowadys.” Aim for accurate, natural combinations such as “species extinction,” “greenhouse-gas emissions,” and “take measures,” and check spelling carefully.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
You attempt a mix of simple and complex sentences, including subordinate clauses such as “which is leading to the threat of animals in forest” and “which is then transported to other cities.” The main ideas are generally understandable, but some grammatical errors recur. For example, “While, others believe” is an incorrectly punctuated fragment, and “problems that a human is facing… are most serious factors” has problems with article use and sentence construction. In “there is a need to take measurements,” the infinitive pattern is possible, but the surrounding phrasing would be clearer with a more direct construction. Review sentence boundaries, articles, agreement, and plural forms, then proofread complex sentences to ensure each clause is complete and clearly connected.
