IELTS Writing Task 2 question

Some people say that the main environmental problem of our time is the loss of particular species of plants and animals. Others say that there are more important environmental problems.

Discuss both these views and give your own opinion.

Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.

Student answer (Band 6.0)

Many people believe that loss of biodiversity is the main environmental problems, while others argue that there are other environmental problems which are more important. I strongly believe that there are many other environmental problems which are more important that loss of biodiversity, as those other problems also contributes directly to loss of biodiversity.

On one hand, loss of particular species of plant and animals affect the environment negatively, as more species of plant and animal provide a healthy environment. Loss of species, also affects other species, in terms of loss of habitate for them, some animals are depend on others for their source of food, shelter and even for enjoyement as they can have good relationships. Similarly, plants provide shelter and food to a vast number of differnt species. However, there are a large number of plants present, there are some perticular species which are dependant on only one. That is why lost of biodiversity is an important environmental problem.

On the other hand, there are huge number of environmental problems such as pollution, deforestation, technoloy, and many more. There is a big list of reasons. But as far as i think, technology advancement is the major reason which is creating environmental problem. Most of the other problems are directly happening because of technological advancements. Say for instence, artificial intelligence (AI). AI is using galons of water every hour at its station. In addition, deforestation is happening because we need more plane land for buildings and factories, not to forget that deforestation is also a cause of lost biodiversity.

In conclusion, even though biodiversity loss is a major environmental problem, 80% of it is happein because of the other problems like pollution and deforestation.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

You address both views and state a clear position: you consider biodiversity loss important but argue that other problems, especially technology-related impacts, are more significant. The discussion of how species depend on one another is relevant, and the examples of water use by AI infrastructure and deforestation help explain your view. However, the two sides are not developed equally: the first paragraph gives several related points but little specific evidence, while the claim that technology is the major cause is asserted more than demonstrated. The conclusion’s figure that “80%” of biodiversity loss results from other problems is unsupported and does not clearly follow from the essay. Develop the comparison with more precise evidence and explain how the examples support your overall judgement.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The response has a clear overall structure: an introduction, separate paragraphs for the two views, and a conclusion. Signposts such as “On one hand,” “On the other hand,” and “In conclusion” make the progression easy to follow, and the main position is maintained. This meets the lower-band expectation of coherent organisation and also shows some flexibility through cause-and-effect links such as “In addition” and “That is why.” However, some connections are mechanical, and the first body paragraph moves quickly between species’ food, shelter, relationships, and plant dependence without clearly distinguishing the points. “There is a big list of reasons” also interrupts the argument rather than advancing it. Use clearer topic sentences and link each example explicitly to the paragraph’s central claim.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use relevant topic vocabulary, including “biodiversity,” “deforestation,” “pollution,” and “technological advancements,” and you attempt more specific expressions such as “source of food” and “artificial intelligence.” This gives you enough range to discuss the topic, but control is uneven: several spelling errors (“habitate,” “differnt,” “instence”) and inaccurate or awkward choices (“plane land,” “relationships” between species, and “technology” as a problem itself) reduce precision. Repetition of “environmental problems” and “loss of biodiversity” also limits flexibility. Aim to use established environmental collocations and check spelling carefully; for example, distinguish technology’s environmental effects from technology itself, and describe land as “cleared” or “available for development” rather than “plane.”

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You use a mix of simple and complex forms, including subordinate clauses with “as,” “while,” and “even though,” and most of the argument remains understandable. Some errors in agreement, articles, and sentence construction persist. For example, “the main environmental problems” should be singular, “other problems … contributes” needs plural agreement, and “some animals are depend” requires a different verb form. The sentence beginning “Loss of species, also affects…” is punctuated incorrectly, while “However, there are a large number…” creates an unclear contrast and clause structure. These errors do not generally prevent the reader from following your meaning, but they make the writing less controlled. Review subject–verb agreement and practise checking each sentence for a complete, logically connected clause.
