IELTS Writing Task 2 question

Discuss both these views and give your own opinion.

Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.

Student answer (Band 6.0)

The extinction of particular species of organisms is the primary environmental problem currently. Whereas other people say that there are other big issues as well. Although loss of one specie affects the population of other species, I believe that population is one of the most detrimental environmental challenge.

Reduction in a one particular specie is the big sign of environmental changes, in short it means that environment is no longer suitable for such organism. Later on, it affects other animal's survival, this is because one animal or plant is diet of other animal. Consequently, it starts decreasing the numbers of living species, which ultimatley causes environmental problem such as habitat loss and climate change. For instance, extinction of Koka birds from an island was result in descreasing population of rats. Afterwards it affected the ecosystem of whole island gradually.

In the modern age, we are facing many catathropic environmental dilemmas such as pollution. Pollution is not only one type, it can be related to air, water and noise. Its not only destroy organism's air quality but also the whole ecosystem. It pollutes their water which damages the equatic life as well. Overall, it is a pressing issue for every species on earth. I also feel that pollution is an alarming issue above species loss. Therefore we should work to reduce it and help our governments to take actions againts it.

In conlusion, some individuals think that vanishing of particular animals or plants is the main environmental problem, however others believe that there are other major environmental issues to focus on. dying out of a specie is very bad for our environment as it transforms other species lives, but other issues such as pollution has more devastating impact on our environment because it has already polluted air, water and land.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

You address both views and give a clear opinion: the opening identifies species loss as a serious problem, while the later paragraph and conclusion argue that pollution is more damaging. The explanation that species decline can disrupt food chains is relevant, and the island example helps illustrate this view. However, the two sides are not developed equally: the discussion of species loss is more specific, whereas pollution is mainly listed by type and described broadly. The claim that species decline causes habitat loss and climate change also needs clearer explanation, and the example of the “Koka birds” would be stronger with context or a more familiar case. Develop the comparison and support each main claim more precisely.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The response has a clear overall structure: an introduction, separate paragraphs for the two environmental concerns, and a conclusion that restates your position. Linking expressions such as “Consequently,” “For instance,” and “Therefore” help show relationships between ideas. However, some connections are mechanical or unclear. For example, “Whereas other people say…” is a sentence fragment, and “Later on, it affects other animal’s survival” does not make the reference of “it” fully clear. The first body paragraph also moves from species decline to habitat loss and climate change without showing the steps in that connection. Use clearer topic sentences and make each sentence’s link to the previous point explicit.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use a reasonable range of topic vocabulary, including “extinction,” “ecosystem,” “pollution,” and “aquatic life,” and you attempt more formal expressions such as “pressing issue” and “detrimental.” Some word choices and collocations are inaccurate or awkward, however, which limits precision: “one specie,” “big sign,” “catathropic environmental dilemmas,” and “pollutes their water” do not express the ideas naturally. There are also spelling errors, including “ultimatley,” “descreasing,” and “conlusion.” These do not prevent the reader from understanding the main argument, but careful proofreading and more accurate collocations would make the vocabulary more effective and consistent.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You attempt a mix of simple and complex sentences, including a concessive opening with “Although” and cause-and-effect structures such as “because” and “which.” The main ideas are generally understandable, but some grammatical errors remain. For example, “Whereas other people say…” is not a complete sentence, “one specie affects” has an incorrect noun form, and “Pollution … not only destroy” has subject–verb disagreement. Articles and plurals are also inconsistent in phrases such as “a one particular specie” and “other animal’s survival.” Review sentence completeness, agreement, and singular/plural forms, then check punctuation around longer sentences. More consistent control of these patterns would make your varied sentence structures clearer.
