IELTS Writing Task 2 question
Some people say that the main environmental problem of our time is the loss of particular species of plants and animals. Others say that there are more important environmental problems.
Discuss both these views and give your own opinion.
Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.
Student answer (Band 6.0)
A considerable amount of environmental problems are increasing day by day. Many individuals believe that loss of native species of plants and animals is a major concern among all of them. This has various adverse effects such as loss of biodiversity. However, according to some people other issues such as air and water pollution, global warming, etc. are more crucial as far as environment is concerned. In my opinion, both the problems are equally important and should remain the topic for discussion in order to prevent its adverse impacts.
Loss of a particular species of plants and animals makes them endangered. This eventually leads to take more care and concerns about them and also to find methodologies in order to prevent their complete disappearance. Loss of such species results in reducing the biodiversity of a prticular region. For instance, in India, various species of Dinausaurs were omnipresent in the past. But then started to disappear gradually. It was believed this loss was due to their reduced amount of resistance towards the environmental changes. I believe that this problem is currently being overcome by various scientific approaches that increase an overall tolerance of a particular species against the changes in environmental conditions.
On the other hand, various problems such as use of plastic, an overall increase in the earth's temperature, deforestation, etc are as crucial as loss of biodiversity. Water and air are the basic neccessity of a life. Nowadays, these are being polluted by an extreme use of vehicles that releases noxious chemicals and gases. Additionally, because of clear cutting of trees the over all temperature of the globe has been increased. Because of global warming, there is rise in the water levels and various harmful effects in the cold regions. For example, in India, the rain is delayed by two months because of global warming, which creates trouble for many farmers. I believe that this problems are now into consideration by governments and researchers that will eventually improve the overall atmosphere.
In conclusion, all the kinds of problems have their deterimental effects on their side and the severity of them can not be decided just by concluding one of them as a main problem. Loss of species is a major concern, which can be overcome by a strong scientific research and creating public awareness. Additionally, other problems can also be solved gradually by implying strong government regulations and public awareness initiatives. In my opinion, all the environmental problems are significant as they have a major impact on our living.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0
You address both views and give a clear overall position: you consider species loss and wider environmental problems equally important. The essay also includes relevant examples, such as pollution from vehicles and effects of global warming on farmers. However, the two sides are not developed equally clearly. The discussion of species loss focuses partly on how endangered species require protection, while the dinosaur example is not a strong illustration of current species decline or its causes. The claim that scientific approaches are overcoming this problem is also asserted rather than explained. To strengthen the response, explain more directly why biodiversity loss matters and develop the comparison with pollution or climate change using specific, well-supported examples.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5
The response has a clear overall structure: an introduction, separate paragraphs for the two views, and a conclusion that restates your position. Transitions such as “However” and “On the other hand” help readers follow the contrast, and the ideas generally progress logically within each paragraph. This meets the lower-band expectations securely and shows some features of stronger organisation. At times, though, connections are mechanical or references are unclear. For example, “this problem” and “these” do not always identify precisely which environmental issue is meant, while the conclusion repeats the idea that all problems are significant without synthesising the comparison. Use more precise referencing and link each example explicitly to the point it supports.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.0
You use an adequate range of topic vocabulary, including “biodiversity,” “deforestation,” “noxious chemicals,” and “global warming,” and these choices make the subject clear. There are also attempts at more formal phrasing, such as “adverse effects” and “public awareness initiatives.” However, some word choices and collocations are inaccurate or awkward, including “a considerable amount of environmental problems,” “omnipresent” for species that once existed, and “implying strong government regulations.” Spelling slips such as “neccessity,” “deterimental,” and “Dinausaurs” also reduce accuracy. Aim for natural combinations and check spelling carefully; for instance, use “a considerable number of environmental problems” and “implement regulations.”
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0
You use a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, including clauses introduced by “because” and “which,” and most of the meaning remains clear. Some sentences show useful control, such as the explanation that pollution comes from vehicles releasing chemicals and gases. However, there are some errors in agreement, articles, verb patterns, and sentence construction. Examples include “This eventually leads to take more care,” “this problems are,” and “the rain is delayed … which creates trouble,” where the grammatical relationships are not consistently controlled. There are also awkward constructions such as “there is rise in the water levels.” Review subject–verb agreement, infinitive patterns, and article use, then proofread complex sentences to ensure each clause is complete and clearly connected.
