IELTS Writing Task 2 question

Some people say that the main environmental problem of our time is the loss of particular species of plants and animals. Others say that there are more important environmental problems.

Discuss both these views and give your own opinion.

Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.

Student answer (Band 5.5)

Some people argue that the main environment problem today is the extinction of some speices of plants and animals. While others say there are more important ecosystem issues. Both these are the causes of issues that we face today. I will explain these 2 ideas and would give my opinion at the end.

Firstly, alot of people say that the main causes of environment problems today is the loss of some species of plants and animals which true in some extant as we have lost many of these that used to balance the ecosystems and cycle is life which is essential for our environment. For example alot of trees are being cut down which have results to increasing carbon dixode as they use to absoreb these and relase the oxygen is necessary for us. Another thing that rise from this the global warming and heat because of cuting of trees. One more thing is increase of deforestaion which have resulted in huge number of global issues and animals extinction as well.

On the other hand, Some people argue that there are more important environment problems like increasing number of factories, Climate change and cutting of trees and forest. In addition with that use of plastic and non friendly eco items have grealty resulted in biodiveristy issues. For example factories that polluted the enironment by sending waste into water and air reuslts in global warming and loss of animals in return and health problems for us well.

In my opinion, there many things that exist which have more deadly impect on environment than loss of plants and animals. Like our exussive use of plastic and non eco friendly items and factories have contributed to the destruction of environment. For example like using plastic bags which does not decompose into the soil results in emitting carbon and harming the ecosystem. Factories around the world also play an major part in harming the biodivarsity and increasing the global warming in return. So we have look after these thing to reduce their impact.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

You address both views and give a clear preference for the view that other environmental problems are more serious. The discussion includes relevant examples, such as deforestation, factory pollution, plastic use, and effects on wildlife and human health. However, the two sides are not developed equally: the first paragraph focuses heavily on tree loss and its effects, rather than explaining more directly why the loss of species itself is considered the main problem. Some claims, such as plastic emitting carbon, also need clearer explanation or support. To strengthen the response, explain the consequences of species extinction in its own right, then compare these consequences with pollution or climate change and make the basis for your opinion more explicit.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The response has a recognisable structure: an introduction, separate paragraphs for the two views, and a concluding opinion. Sequencing phrases such as “Firstly” and “On the other hand” help readers follow the shift between positions, and examples generally appear alongside the points they illustrate. However, the introduction promises that the opinion will come “at the end,” although a position is already suggested, and the conclusion repeats earlier examples rather than drawing the comparison together. Some links are mechanical, including repeated “For example” and “One more thing,” while references such as “these” and “this” are not always precise. Use clearer links between cause and consequence, and make each paragraph develop one central point.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.0

You use relevant environmental vocabulary, including “extinction,” “ecosystems,” “global warming,” “deforestation,” and “biodiversity,” which helps communicate the topic. There is also an attempt to use more specific phrases such as “cycle of life” and “non-friendly eco items.” However, spelling errors are frequent, including “speices,” “dixode,” “deforestaion,” and “biodivarsity,” and several word choices or collocations are unclear or unnatural. Phrases such as “more deadly impact on environment” and “rise from this” make some ideas harder to interpret. Build accuracy by checking spelling carefully and learning common combinations such as “environmental problems,” “factory emissions,” and “damage to biodiversity.”

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

You attempt both simple and more complex sentences, including clauses beginning with “While” and “which,” and the overall meaning is usually recoverable. However, errors in sentence structure, agreement, articles, and verb forms occur often enough to make some sentences difficult to follow. For example, “the main causes … is” has a subject–verb agreement problem, while “which have results to increasing” and “we have look after” use incorrect verb patterns. The opening “While others say…” is also a fragment when separated from the preceding sentence. Practise building complete sentences with accurate subject–verb agreement and verb forms, and check articles and punctuation when joining clauses.
