IELTS Writing Task 2 question
Some people say that the main environmental problem of our time is the loss of particular species of plants and animals. Others say that there are more important environmental problems.
Discuss both these views and give your own opinion.
Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.
Student answer (Band 6.0)
A healthy environment plays a crucial role on surrounding habitat lives. While it is often argued that the major factor of environmental degradation is extinction of specific organisms, others contend that the urbanization and deforestation are more impactful causes. I believe that the environment degradation has multiple triggering components- such as growing urbanization and cutting of trees, but the extinct of species also considered as a imperative element.
First and foremost, growing urbanization brings multiple negative developments which act as a catalyst towards environment degradation. This is because urban cities produce excessive carbon emissions through industrialization and usage of private cars, which pollutes the environment and surroundings. As a result, the air quality of various urban cities are considered poor for healthy lifestyle. For instance, Karachi is known as the industrial zone of Pakistan; however the citizens often complained the poor air quality which makes breathing difficult.
On the other hand, people who believe that the biodiversity loss has significant impact on ecosystem imbalance. The reason behind this development is because every natural organism plays a vital role in balancing of ecosystem although many species have become extinct, as a result it is considered as the major cause for environment degradation. For example, Scientific research shows that there are several group of animals and plants who are considered as endangered living organisms.
In conclusion, there are factors in which humans are contributing towards degradation of environment, though the extinction of important species should also considered as the major cause. I believe that the technological advancements in industrialization and growing urbanization which involves massive deforestation programs may also have significant impacts of habitats daily wellbeing.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0
You address both views and state a position: urbanisation and deforestation are presented as major pressures, while species extinction is also described as important. The paragraph on urbanisation gives a relevant cause-and-effect explanation and a Karachi example. However, the discussion of biodiversity loss is less fully developed: the claim that organisms help balance ecosystems is not explained with a specific mechanism, and the example only says that some species are endangered rather than showing the consequences of their loss. Your conclusion also introduces technological advancement and deforestation without clearly weighing these against species extinction. Develop each side with a precise explanation and example, then make your comparative judgement explicit throughout.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5
The response has a clear overall structure, with an introduction, separate paragraphs for the two views, and a conclusion. Sequencing phrases such as “First and foremost,” “On the other hand,” and “In conclusion” help readers follow the discussion, and the urbanisation paragraph progresses from cause to effect and example. This meets the lower-band expectation of coherent organisation and shows some flexibility in linking ideas. However, some connections are mechanical or unclear: “The reason behind this development is because” repeats the causal link, while “although many species have become extinct, as a result” joins ideas in a confusing way. Use fewer formulaic transitions and make the relationship between claims and evidence more precise.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.0
You use an adequate range of topic vocabulary, including “carbon emissions,” “industrialization,” “biodiversity loss,” “ecosystem imbalance,” and “deforestation.” These choices make the subject clear, and attempts at more formal language show awareness of the task’s academic style. Some less common expressions are inaccurate or awkward, however, such as “environment degradation,” “the extinct of species,” and “habitats daily wellbeing.” There is also repetition of “environment” and “major cause,” and “endangered living organisms” is less precise than the intended meaning. Aim for accurate collocations and word forms, and vary repeated terms with suitable alternatives such as “environmental damage” or “species decline.”
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
You attempt a mix of simple and complex structures, including a contrast clause beginning “While it is often argued…” and a cause-and-effect sentence beginning “This is because…”. Meaning is generally recoverable, but some grammatical errors recur. For example, “the air quality … are” has a subject–verb agreement problem, and “the extinction of important species should also considered” is missing “be.” The sentence beginning “On the other hand, people who believe…” is incomplete, while the long sentence about organisms and extinction has unclear clause connections. Check agreement, complete sentence structure, and auxiliary verbs, and divide overloaded sentences so that complex ideas remain controlled.
