IELTS Writing Task 2 question

Some people say that the main environmental problem of our time is the loss of particular species of plants and animals. Others say that there are more important environmental problems.

Discuss both these views and give your own opinion.

Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.

Student answer (Band 6.0)

Some people say that the major environmental problem of this century is the extinction of particular species of plants and animals, while others say that there are different environmental problems we should worry about more. Although, I can see the point of both sides, I personally agree that there are bigger problems than extenction of fauna and flora.

On the one hand, extinction of different species is a huge issue nowadays. There are varius species, especially in Africa or Amazonia, that extenct every year and we cannot do anything about that. Although, governments implement different programs that aim to help to secure particular species, the problem of climat changes and hunters is still a huge issue. For instance, the goverment of Uganda has implemented the program thanks to which gorillas live in secured zones. As a result, there are less gorilla's hunters every year. The problem is still visible but the results are better than expected.

On the other hand, there are other problems that have to be solved, for instace the global warming which leads to rising level of water. Every year the level of water is going higher, what leads to particular parts of world to be floaded. The rising water level will in the nearest future lead to floading of, for instance, Maledives and Netherlands. These are two countries that lie approximately on the sea level or just slightly above. So if the governments will not start implementing programms that aim to slower the global warming, in a few years those countries will diseaper.

To sum everything up,, I generally agree to some point with both sides of the argument, but at the same time, I strongly believe, that there are a lot of environmental problem, and the extinction of species is not the biggest one.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

You address both views and state your position clearly: you recognise species extinction as serious but argue that broader environmental threats are more pressing. The two body paragraphs are relevant, with examples of gorilla protection and the risks of rising sea levels for the Maldives and the Netherlands. This gives the response a sound basis and covers the task. However, the discussion is unevenly developed: the first view is supported mainly by one example, while the claim that other problems are more important would benefit from explaining more directly how climate change affects people and ecosystems on a wider scale. Some claims, such as that countries will disappear “in a few years,” are asserted rather than qualified or supported. More precise explanation would strengthen the argument.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The essay has a clear overall structure: an introduction, separate paragraphs for the two views, and a conclusion. “On the one hand” and “On the other hand” make the contrast easy to follow, and the examples generally appear in the relevant paragraphs. The progression is therefore coherent, though some linking is mechanical and a few connections are unclear. For example, “Although” begins a sentence in both the introduction and the first body paragraph without completing a contrastive structure, and “what leads to” does not connect the rising water level to flooding smoothly. The conclusion repeats the position but adds little synthesis. Use a wider range of natural transitions and make cause-and-effect links explicit to improve flow.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use relevant topic vocabulary, including “extinction,” “species,” “global warming,” “rising water level,” and “secured zones,” so the main ideas are understandable. There are also attempts at more specific language, such as “implementing programs” and “sea level.” However, spelling and word-choice errors are noticeable and sometimes distract the reader: “extenct,” “varius,” “floaded,” and “diseaper” appear in place of standard forms, while “slower the global warming” is an unnatural collocation. Some wording is also imprecise, such as “different environmental problems” and “huge issue.” Build accuracy with topic-specific collocations and careful proofreading, and choose more precise terms when describing environmental impacts.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You attempt a mix of simple and complex sentences, including clauses with “although,” “which,” and “thanks to which.” This shows some range, and the overall meaning is usually clear. However, there are recurring errors in sentence construction, verb forms, articles, and punctuation. For example, “Although, I can see the point” uses an unnecessary comma and leaves the contrast awkwardly attached; “if the governments will not start” needs a different conditional form; and “there are a lot of environmental problem” has a number-agreement error. The sentence beginning “Every year the level of water is going higher, what leads…” also has faulty clause linkage. Review conditional structures, agreement, and punctuation, then check each sentence for a complete and natural grammatical pattern.
