IELTS Writing Task 2 question

Some people say that the main environmental problem of our time is the loss of particular species of plants and animals. Others say that there are more important environmental problems.

Discuss both these views and give your own opinion.

Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.

Student answer (Band 6.5)

Many people argue that the major environmental issue of present time is reduction of particular species of plants and animals, while others believe that there are numerous environmental issues greater than this. Although extinction of biodiversity is a matter of concern, I believe that there are others crucial issues such as global warming and air pollution which needs greater attention.

On the one hand, loss of plants and animals can have serious consequences for environment. This is because it can effect the biodiversity and make ecosystem less stable. For example, decline in bee population can reduce the pollination of plants which may effect agriculture production.

On the other hand, environmental issues such as global warming and air pollution needs global attention because it affect both human beings and biodiversity in large scale. Due to the greenhouse gas emissions the temperature of planet is rising which is affecting both plants and animals. For example, The release of gas from vehicle and industries is causing ozone layer depletion exposes the planet from ultra violet rays directly coming from sun. In addition, air pollution is causing several skin related diseases to human being. Therefore, addressing these problems can help for both human being and biodiversity.

In conclusion, Although extinction of plants and animals can have considerable effect on biodiversity, I believe there are numerous other problems such as global warming and air pollution that need to be tackle down because it can cause several skin related problems to human beings and plays the role in extinction of some species.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

You address both views and state a clear opinion: the opening acknowledges species loss but argues that global warming and air pollution deserve greater attention. Relevant support includes the effect of declining bee populations on pollination and the impact of pollution on people and biodiversity. This meets the task well, but the two sides are not developed equally: the first view receives only one brief example, while the discussion of other problems is broader but includes an unclear explanation of ozone depletion. The conclusion repeats your position rather than adding a developed final insight. To strengthen the response further, explain more fully why species loss may be considered the main problem, and support your comparison with precise, accurate examples and clearer cause-and-effect reasoning.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0

The response has a clear overall structure: an introduction, separate paragraphs for the two views, and a conclusion. The progression from the consequences of species loss to wider environmental threats is easy to follow, and signposts such as “On the one hand,” “On the other hand,” and “In conclusion” help guide the reader. Some linking is less smooth within sentences, however. For example, the transition from greenhouse gas emissions to ozone depletion does not clearly explain how the ideas relate, and “Therefore” introduces a broad claim without a fully established link to the preceding examples. The conclusion also largely repeats the introduction. Use more precise referencing and connect each example explicitly to the point it supports to make cohesion more flexible and less dependent on formulaic transitions.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

You use an adequate range of topic vocabulary, including “biodiversity,” “ecosystem,” “greenhouse gas emissions,” and “ozone layer depletion,” which makes the environmental focus clear. There are also attempts at more formal phrasing, such as “considerable effect” and “global attention.” However, some word choices and collocations are inaccurate or awkward: “reduction of particular species” is less natural than describing a decline in their populations, and “tackle down” does not fit the intended meaning. “Skin related diseases” is also imprecise in this context. These choices do not prevent understanding, but they limit precision. Build accuracy by learning environmental collocations in context and checking whether verbs and nouns naturally combine, rather than relying on direct translations.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, including a concession in the introduction (“Although…”) and a conditional explanation (“which may…”). Meaning is generally clear, but some grammatical errors remain. Subject–verb agreement is inconsistent in “issues … needs” and “it affect”; articles and noun forms are also problematic in phrases such as “for environment” and “in large scale.” The final sentence has an unclear structure around “need to be tackle down,” and the comma after “Although” in the conclusion is unnecessary. Review agreement, articles, and verb patterns, then proofread each sentence for a clear subject and correctly formed verb. More consistent control of these basics would make your complex sentences more reliable.
