IELTS Writing Task 2 question

Some people say that the main environmental problem of our time is the loss of particular species of plants and animals. Others say that there are more important environmental problems.

Discuss both these views and give your own opinion.

Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.

Student answer (Band 6.0)

Nowadays, environmental problem is a burning issue in all over the world. Some people believes that the loss of different plants and animals is the major issue for nature, but others argue that this is not the only issue . Here I will discuss both viewpoints.

One the one hand, extinction of different types of species is certainly detrimental for the environment, cause it reduce the balance of ecosystem. Every species, whether its plants or animals has its own role in the vast nature. So, when one genre slowly get extinct, the nature needs to go through some unknown changes which often is not in favour for humans. For instance, a rare species named anteelop are well known for eating ants, which helps to maintain ants number in particular environment. So if now slowly that species get vanished, then the number of ant will increase and the human will suffer to eradicate those. For like above purpose, every species are important for nature .

On the other hand, the increasing number of population is responsible for the most environmental problems. Due to cope with the demand of this high global population , people started to doing things that are harmful for our surroundings. For example, if the population of a city increased with alarming rate , they have to build new buildings for accommodation purpose and also need to source more food from near natural resources. Excessive collection of food from those sources make the ecosystem imbalance. In recent days deforestation are happening just only to meet human demand , which also making our surrounding environment hard to live.

In conclusion, I thinks both of those overview are bad for environment ,but extinction of different species plays only a small role compare to the other human made problem for the recent environmental problem.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

You address both views and give a clear overall position: species loss matters, but human-driven problems are more significant. The discussion of extinction is supported with an example about antelope and ants, while the second view links population growth to construction, food demand and deforestation. These are relevant points, but some are less fully developed than others. The antelope example is difficult to assess because the species and its ecological role are not explained precisely, and the claim that species loss plays only a small role is asserted rather than justified. Develop the comparison by explaining more directly how the scale or consequences of population-related damage outweigh biodiversity loss, and support examples with clearer reasoning.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The response has a coherent overall arrangement: an introduction, separate paragraphs for the two views, and a conclusion that states your opinion. Signposting such as “On the one hand,” “On the other hand,” and “In conclusion” makes the progression easy to follow, and the examples generally sit with the relevant argument. This clear structure already supports the reader well. However, some links are mechanical, and a few references are unclear—for example, “those sources” could refer to food or natural resources, while “For like above purpose” does not clearly connect the example to the point. Use more precise referencing and vary transitions by showing the relationship between ideas, such as cause, consequence or contrast, rather than relying mainly on fixed paragraph openers.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use a range of topic-related vocabulary, including “extinction,” “ecosystem,” “deforestation,” “accommodation,” and “natural resources,” so the main environmental ideas are communicated. There are also attempts at more specific phrasing, such as “alarming rate” and “human-made problem.” However, noticeable word-choice, collocation and word-form errors reduce precision: “burning issue in all over the world,” “one genre” for a species, and “make the ecosystem imbalance” are not natural expressions. Spelling and form errors such as “anteelop” and “thinks” also affect accuracy. Build a reliable set of environmental collocations and check whether each word fits its intended meaning; this will make your arguments clearer and more natural.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

You attempt both simple and complex sentences, including conditional and cause-and-effect structures: “So, when one genre slowly get extinct…” and “if the population of a city increased…”. This shows an effort to express relationships between ideas, and the overall meaning is usually recoverable. However, control is inconsistent, especially in subject–verb agreement, verb forms, articles and sentence construction. Examples include “Some people believes,” “it reduce,” “species are important,” and “I thinks.” The sentence beginning “Due to cope with the demand” also has a faulty grammatical pattern. Practise checking the subject and verb in each clause, and revise complex sentences to ensure their clauses are complete and correctly connected. More accurate control of these patterns would improve readability.
