IELTS Writing Task 2 question

Some people say that the main environmental problem of our time is the loss of particular species of plants and animals. Others say that there are more important environmental problems.

Discuss both these views and give your own opinion.

Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.

Student answer (Band 7.0)

Loss of biodiversity of flora and fauna is a serious concern, and some believe it to be of highest priority. While others argue that there are others environmental concerns that should be given more thought. I believe loss of species is a serious concern, however, problems related to pollution and climate change should be given higher priority. These are fundamental issues and solving them will simultaniously solve the problems of biodiversity.

In the recent years, various species of plants and animals have declined, some are even on the verge of extinction. Supporters hold a view that every life form is equally important and saving them from extinction should be our utmost responsibility. One of the recent example of a serious decline of a life form is the near extinction of costal reefs of australia. Research suggests that one of the reasons is the rise in the global water body temperatures.

On the other hand, people argue that environmental problems such as pollution, climate change, deforestation and global warming are of higher priority. They argue that loss of biodiversity is not an independent issue, and is an effect of other serious environmental problems. The emminent issue of loss of particular species can be reduced by solving the aforementioned problems. One example is the boom of animal and plant population during the covid lockdown. Pollution creating industries were shutdown and people were ordered to stay indoors, both helped in reducing the serious environmental problems, which in turn helped the growth of plant and animal population and biodiversity.

In conclusion, solving problems such as climate change and pollution will help reduce the loss of biodiversity of flora and fauna.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0

You address both views and state a clear position: species loss is serious, but pollution and climate change deserve higher priority because tackling them can also protect biodiversity. The two main body paragraphs support the opposing perspectives, using coral reefs and the lockdown as examples. This meets the task well, with relevant ideas extended and supported. To strengthen the response further, develop the examples more precisely: explain how warming threatens coral reefs, and qualify the lockdown example rather than implying that it broadly caused animal and plant populations to grow. The conclusion restates your position but could briefly synthesise why the wider environmental problems are more fundamental.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0

The essay has a clear overall structure: an introduction presents the debate and your view, the body paragraphs discuss each side, and the conclusion returns to your position. Progression is easy to follow, and signposts such as “On the other hand” and “In conclusion” help guide the reader. There is also a logical link between the claim that biodiversity loss is an effect of other problems and the examples that follow. To make cohesion more flexible, avoid relying on repeated references to “problems” and “loss of biodiversity”; use clearer substitutions or connectives that show cause and consequence. The opening also contains a sentence fragment beginning “While others argue,” which interrupts the flow between ideas.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.5

You use a suitable range of topic vocabulary, including “biodiversity,” “extinction,” “global water body temperatures,” and “environmental problems.” These choices communicate the subject clearly, and phrases such as “higher priority” and “on the verge of extinction” are appropriate. The range shows some flexibility, but several word-choice and spelling slips limit precision: “costal reefs” should be “coastal reefs,” “emminent” should be “imminent,” and “simultaniously” should be “simultaneously.” Some phrasing is also imprecise, such as “boom of animal and plant population”; a more measured expression would suit the argument better. Aim for accurate collocations and avoid repeating broad terms when a more specific noun is available.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.5

You attempt a mix of simple and complex structures, including the contrast in “I believe loss of species is a serious concern, however…” and the relative clause in “problems…that should be given higher priority.” Most sentences remain understandable, and the argument is not obscured. However, some grammatical errors persist. “While others argue…” is a dependent clause presented as a sentence, and “some are even on the verge…” joins two independent clauses with only a comma. There are also issues with articles and number, as in “One of the recent example,” and “there are others environmental concerns.” Review sentence boundaries, article use, and plural agreement, while continuing to practise complex sentences with accurate punctuation.
