IELTS Writing Task 2 question
Some people say that the main environmental problem of our time is the loss of particular species of plants and animals. Others say that there are more important environmental problems.
Discuss both these views and give your own opinion.
Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.
Student answer (Band 6.0)
The problems which affect the environment badly and disturb the ecosystem are called environmental problems. Environmental problems are increasing day by day, which affect our daily life, and many other specific species of plants and animals. Some individuals believe that the main environmental problem of our time is the loss of particular species of plants and animals, while some people argue that there are multiple important environmental problems instead of species loss. I also believe that we have multiple other significant environmental problems instead of species loss, but species loss is also a part of environmental problems.
On the one hand, some argue that main enivronmental problem is the loss of species of plants and animals becuase if there will be no plants on the surface of earth there will be no oxygen, and the excess of carbon dioxide will be noted which is a considerable environmental problem. If we talk about animals, they are also playing an important role in the community. For example, the birds spread seeds of different plants which increases the cluster of trees, however most of the birds and insects are responsible for pollination, moreover grazing animals increase the fertility of soil. So without animals we have different environmental issues due to which one sector believes that loss of species of plants and animals is the main cause of environmental problems.
On the other hand, some people believe that there are other more important environmental issues. Pollution is a significant challange of this world and causes serious environmental problems, like water pollution causes health diseases. Greenhouse gases are also responsible for environmental issues. Water scarcity is also contributing in environmental problems.
So, in my opinion other environmental problems are more important and need an attention to solve, because if these problems will remain unsolvable they will affect the species as well. These environmenatl hazards can damage our plants and animals badly If these critical concerns remain unaddressed.
In conclusion, species are also very important for stable ecosystem and environment but if other important environmental problems remain unaddressed they will affect our ecosystem and species badly.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0
The response discusses both views and gives a clear opinion: you consider species loss important but argue that other environmental problems are more significant because they can also harm wildlife. The examples about seed dispersal, pollination and soil fertility make the first view relevant, while pollution, greenhouse gases and water scarcity address the alternative. However, the second view is less developed: these problems are listed, but their scale or consequences are not explained in much detail. The claim that pollution causes “health diseases,” for instance, could be supported with a specific example or linked more clearly to environmental damage. To strengthen the response, develop one or two examples on each side and explain why they support your position.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0
The essay has a coherent overall arrangement: an introduction, separate paragraphs for the two views, your opinion, and a conclusion. Signposting such as “On the one hand,” “On the other hand,” and “In conclusion” helps readers follow the discussion. Some connections are less smooth or repetitive, however. The final opinion paragraph repeats the idea that environmental hazards harm species, which is also stated in the conclusion, while the transition from the list of other problems to your position is abrupt. Within the first body paragraph, several points are joined in a long sequence with “however” and “moreover,” making their relationships less clear. Use linking phrases more selectively and organise each paragraph around a clear main point followed by explanation and evidence.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
You use a relevant range of topic vocabulary, including “ecosystem,” “carbon dioxide,” “pollination,” “greenhouse gases,” and “water scarcity.” These terms help communicate the subject, and the meaning is generally clear. However, some word choices and collocations are inaccurate or unnatural, such as “health diseases,” “cluster of trees,” “causes environmental problems,” and “need an attention.” There are also spelling errors, including “enivronmental,” “becuase,” “challange,” and “environmenatl.” These slips reduce precision, particularly when similar phrases such as “environmental problems” and “environmental issues” recur. Aim for accurate collocations and proofread spelling; more precise wording would make your argument sound more controlled and natural.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
You use both simple and complex sentence forms, including conditional structures such as “if these problems will remain unsolvable they will affect the species” and relative clauses such as “which increases the … cluster of trees.” The overall meaning remains understandable, but some grammatical errors occur in these structures. For example, the conditional would be more accurate as “if these problems remain unresolved, they will affect species,” and “the main environmental problem” needs an article. In “the birds spread seeds … which increases,” the clause reference and subject–verb agreement are unclear; “which helps increase tree cover” would be more controlled. Punctuation is also inconsistent, especially around the final sentence. Continue practising conditionals, articles, agreement and sentence boundaries while retaining your attempts at complex structures.
