IELTS Writing Task 2 question
Some people say that the main environmental problem of our time is the loss of particular species of plants and animals. Others say that there are more important environmental problems.
Discuss both these views and give your own opinion.
Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.
Student answer (Band 6.0)
In recent years, there has been a growing debate about whether the main environmental problem of our time is due to the loss of specific plants or animals or it is due to other important enviromental factors. This essay will discuss both the perspectives and present my own view.
Some individuals believe that the environmental problem rises the loss of particular species of plants and animals. Plants serve many purposes, especially providing a meal to many species of animals. If the plants are destroyed, which were the only source of meal to some animals, those animals will eventually die. Consequently, endangering other animals, such as lions and cheetas that relied on the farmer animals for food. As a result of disrupting a natural cycle, many environmental problems can appear.
However, critics say that the primary enviromenal problem is due to air and water pollution. The rapid advancement in technology resulted an increasing trend of constructing new industries. Thus, the harmful gases from these industries combines with air, which could adversely affect the ecosystem, involving the living organisms, such as birds and animals. Furthermore, These industries heavily rely on biofuel, which is produced from the trees and plants. Therefore, a significant amount of trees are demolished in order to meet the requirements of the industries.
In my opinion, I largely agree with the second view, the issues caused from loss of plants and animals can be reversed, such as by preserving the endanged species. However, the problems from the developments of industries are more critical. Because, the nation's growth tends be more impossible without the industries. Therefore, I believe we must adopt alterantives to the energy used to run the industires, such as by shifting to nuclear energy that can perform the same work far more effectively, and also producing minimal pollution.
In conclusion, while both the views have their own weights. Loss of certain species of plants and animals can pose threat to the environment but I believe the core reason behined the environmental problem is due to other environmental factors, such as disruption of ecosystem.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0
You address both views and give a clear opinion, favouring the problems associated with industry and pollution. The first body paragraph explains how plant loss can disrupt food chains, and the second identifies industrial emissions and tree removal as wider concerns. Your position is also reinforced in the conclusion. However, some ideas are less fully developed than others: the claim that species loss can be reversed through preservation is asserted rather than explained, and the discussion of industrial growth and nuclear energy would benefit from a specific example or clearer reasoning. The conclusion also introduces “disruption of ecosystem” as the core cause, although this is not clearly established as your main argument. Develop these points more consistently and precisely.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5
The response has a clear overall structure: an introduction, separate paragraphs for the two views, your opinion, and a conclusion. Linking expressions such as “Consequently,” “However,” and “Furthermore” help show relationships between ideas, and the reader can follow your general argument. This meets the lower-band expectations securely and shows some features of stronger progression. To make the organisation more fluent, avoid links that create incomplete or awkward connections: “Consequently, endangering other animals” is not a complete sentence, and “Because” begins a fragment in the opinion paragraph. Also make the conclusion follow directly from the argument about industry and pollution rather than introducing ecosystem disruption as a new central point.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
You use relevant environmental vocabulary, including “ecosystem,” “natural cycle,” “harmful gases,” “endangered species,” and “nuclear energy,” which allows you to discuss the topic. There is also some attempt at less common phrasing, such as “adopt alternatives” and “adversely affect.” However, noticeable spelling and word-choice errors limit precision, including “enviromental,” “cheetas,” “enviromenal,” “endanged,” and “alterantives.” Some combinations are also unnatural, such as “the environmental problem rises the loss” and “farmer animals.” Aim to use accurate collocations and check spelling carefully; this will make your ideas clearer and your vocabulary more controlled.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
You attempt a mix of simple and complex structures, including conditional clauses (“If the plants are destroyed…”) and relative clauses (“which were the only source…”). Most of the argument remains understandable, but some grammatical errors affect clarity and control. For example, “the harmful gases… combines” has a subject–verb agreement error, while “the rapid advancement… resulted an increasing trend” is missing a required preposition. “Consequently, endangering other animals” and “Because, the nation’s growth…” are sentence fragments, and “the issues caused from loss” has an awkward grammatical pattern. Practise checking agreement, verb patterns, and whether each sentence has a complete main clause, while continuing to use complex sentences.
