IELTS Writing Task 2 question

Some people say that the main environmental problem of our time is the loss of particular species of plants and animals. Others say that there are more important environmental problems.

Discuss both these views and give your own opinion.

Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.

Student answer (Band 6.0)

Nowadays, large amount of species are becoming extinct due to various environmental factors. Some people believe loss of certain flora and fauna is key reason, while others argue that there are other major alarming environmental issues to be considered. This assay will argue both its views before stating my view that people should show concern more about the other alarming issues.

One among the major reasons for conservation of extinct species is their role in levels of food chain, there reduction can disturb the balance in the chain. As a result entire population gets effected. Moreover, many species particularly flora carries cultural importance. For instance, lotous and jasmine are considered as religiously important species, decrease in these species may loss cultural aspects and benefits.

On the other hand, people should consider other major factors such as global warming, this is destroying atmospheric ozone layer. Which in turns affect entire living beings with exposure to UV radiations . Furthermore, deforestation should gain attention among people as it limits natural habitat for many species. Cutting down of tress snatches home for birds and animals. To clarify this, cutting off forest murgavani in Telangana to build home and appartments for people to live reduces natural homes for many species. If people start conservation of forest it may help them to resort flora and fauna

in the world.

In my opinion, people should concentrate majorly on other global issues such as deforestation, since they help indireclty in providing habitat to plants and animals.

In conclusion, although plants and animals have significant improtance in food change and cultural diversity, the need to concern other environmental isssues like global warming and deforestation are essential. I personally recommend people to focus equally on both than concentration majorly on plants and animals.

At times, however, connections are mechanical or unclear: “Which in turns affect…” is an incomplete sentence, and “If people start conservation of forest it may help them to resort flora and fauna” does not clearly express the intended relationship. Use referencing that identifies what “it” and “them” refer to, and connect examples directly to the point they support.

You use a relevant range of environmental vocabulary, including “extinct species,” “food chain,” “global warming,” “deforestation,” and “natural habitat.” These terms allow you to discuss both sides of the question, and you attempt more specific language in the local forest example. However, noticeable word-choice, collocation, word-form, and spelling errors sometimes make the meaning less clear. Examples include “this assay,” “key reason,” “gets effected,” “lotous,” “tress,” and “improtant.” Some phrases are also unnatural, such as “resort flora and fauna” and “other environmental issues are essential.” Build accuracy by checking spelling and choosing standard collocations, for example “protect flora and fauna” and “other environmental issues require attention.”

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You attempt both simple and complex sentence forms, including cause-and-effect clauses such as “As a result entire population gets…” and conditional phrasing beginning “If people start…”. The paragraphing also gives you opportunities to vary sentence structure. Some grammatical errors remain, though the main ideas are generally understandable. For example, “there reduction” needs a possessive form, “many species particularly flora carries” has a subject–verb agreement problem, and “Which in turns affect…” is a sentence fragment with agreement errors. Articles and plurals are also inconsistent in phrases such as “entire population” and “conservation of forest.” Review sentence boundaries, subject–verb agreement, and article use, then proofread complex sentences to ensure each clause is complete and correctly connected.
