IELTS Writing Task 2 question
Some people say that the main environmental problem of our time is the loss of particular species of plants and animals. Others say that there are more important environmental problems.
Discuss both these views and give your own opinion.
Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.
Student answer (Band 5.0)
Enviroment issues are very important to the survival of plants, animals and humans. Many plants and animals have become scarce and some are extinct as a result of enviromental changes worldwide. I have believe that both views are essintial, climate change and human activities are sited as the main causes for environmental changes.
In recent years, global warming has caused climates to change. As a result most plants and animals have failed to adapt to the changes causing them to die. For example, change in rainfall patterns in the developing countries has made rivers to dry. Subsequently, wildlife will have less water to drink and forced to migrate in search of drinking water. Vegetation is also affected by climate change and this results in reduction of shelter for animals and birds.
Mining industry has been growing in parts of the world, especially in African ccountries. The growth of these illegal activities by human has caused degradation of the environment. For instance, in Zimbabwe there had an influx of gold diggers, which has made the government to introduce some laws and regulations on mining. However, this has not reduced the number of illegal mines. I believe governments shoul come up with strategies that help preserve the environment. Therefore, human activities have caused harm be it for agricultural of economic survival.
In conclusion, different views do not matter a lot. What matters is how are we saving our environment. Both views have valid statements, l believe as scholars we need to find solutions which are practical.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.0
You address both views by discussing species loss and broader environmental pressures such as climate change and human activity, and you give a general position that both matter. The examples of changing rainfall and illegal gold mining in Zimbabwe make the discussion relevant. However, the task asks you to compare the views and explain your own opinion; the response does not clearly establish whether species loss is the main problem or whether other issues are more important. The conclusion, “different views do not matter a lot,” also avoids resolving that comparison. Several points are asserted rather than explained, so the response only partially fulfils the task. State your position directly and develop each view with a clear explanation of its relative importance.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.0
The response has a recognisable introduction, two body paragraphs and a conclusion, and the body paragraphs broadly separate climate-related effects from human activity. Linking expressions such as “As a result,” “For example,” and “In conclusion” help show relationships between ideas. However, progression is limited: the essay moves from species loss to climate change and mining without consistently connecting these examples to the question of which environmental problem is more important. Some links are mechanical, and “Therefore” does not clearly follow the preceding point. The final paragraph introduces “scholars” without a clear reference or role in the argument. Improve the logical progression by giving each paragraph a clear central claim and using transitions that explicitly compare the two views.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
You use relevant environmental vocabulary, including “global warming,” “rainfall patterns,” “degradation of the environment,” “vegetation,” and “preserve the environment.” These terms allow you to discuss the topic with some specificity, and the examples are generally understandable. However, the range is uneven, with repeated general words such as “environment,” “changes,” and “activities,” and several inaccurate or awkward choices reduce precision. For example, “climates to change” and “failed to adapt to the changes” are understandable but could be expressed more naturally, while “agricultural of economic survival” is unclear. Spelling errors such as “Enviroment,” “essintial,” and “shoul” are also noticeable. Build a more precise range of collocations and check spelling carefully.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
You attempt both simple and complex sentences, including cause-and-effect structures such as “As a result…,” and a relative clause in “wildlife… forced to migrate.” However, complex sentences are often faulty, and errors occur frequently enough to make some relationships difficult to follow. Examples include “I have believe,” “has made rivers to dry,” and “there had an influx,” which show problems with verb forms and sentence patterns. In “wildlife will have less water to drink and forced to migrate,” the second verb phrase lacks a matching auxiliary. There are also issues with articles, agreement and punctuation, including the comma splice in the opening paragraph. Practise accurate clause construction and verb patterns, then proofread each sentence for a complete subject and verb.
