IELTS Writing Task 2 question

Some people say that the main environmental problem of our time is the loss of particular species of plants and animals. Others say that there are more important environmental problems.

Discuss both these views and give your own opinion.

Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.

Student answer (Band 6.5)

Many people believe that the most common enviromental issue of present time is the extinction of particular species of plants and animals, while others argue that there are more crucial environmental problems. Although, environmental disturbance may cause loss of certain species, I believe there are more important nature problems to discuss such as increased global warming and potential health risks to human beings.

On the one hand, some believe that environmental problems is the leading cause of loss of certain species of plants and wildlife. This is because of building more and more housing societies and modernising the overall city's infrastructure. To accomodate many people in the country and improve the economy of the state, governments are now utilising more of the recreational areas and the forestlands. This leads to destruction of habitats of certain species of plants and animals who are living in particular areas. For instance, many plants grow in particular environment and animals require adequate needs to reproduce and if they loss their habitats, it may result in the extinction of specific plants and animals.

On the other hand, many believe that there are other important problems present to bring in consideration. The leading problems these days are rise in temperature, which is basically caused by traffic congestion. More cars on the road and urbanisation may result in the pollution and ultimately increasing health problems in individuals. Furthermore, increased global warming may cause serious environmental hazards such as rising sea levels and flooding in rural areas. Even though environmental problems may affect certain species but these problems can be addressed by giving alternative habitats to the specific species. However, I believe the other problems are quite aggressive and more crucial, therefore they need rapid action from the organisations.

In conclusion, although environmental issues may cause some plants and animals species to extinct, other environmental problems are more important and governments should look after the cause of these problems and provide appropriate measure to certain environmental issues.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

You address both views and state a clear preference for broader environmental problems, especially global warming and risks to human health. The first body paragraph explains how development and forest clearance can destroy habitats, while the second gives relevant consequences such as rising sea levels and flooding. This covers the task well, and your examples support the main points. However, the discussion is uneven: the species-loss argument is explained mainly through habitat destruction, while the alternative problems are grouped together and the link between traffic, warming, and health risks could be made more precise. The claim that species loss can be addressed by providing alternative habitats is also asserted rather than supported. Develop these points further to make the discussion more consistently convincing.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The response has a clear overall structure: an introduction, separate paragraphs for the two views, and a conclusion. The signposts “On the one hand,” “On the other hand,” and “In conclusion” make the progression easy to follow, and the reader can identify your position. Some connections, however, are mechanical or unclear. For example, “Although environmental disturbance may cause loss…” in the introduction does not clearly set up the contrast that follows, and “these problems” in the second body paragraph could refer to several different issues. The paragraph also moves quickly from traffic congestion to pollution, health, warming, and flooding. Use more precise referencing and build clearer links between each cause and consequence to make cohesion more flexible and progression smoother.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

You use an adequate range of topic vocabulary, including “extinction,” “habitats,” “infrastructure,” “global warming,” and “rising sea levels.” These choices help communicate the environmental focus, and some less common terms are attempted. However, several word choices and collocations are inaccurate or unnatural, such as “more crucial environmental problems,” “adequate needs,” “problems present to bring in consideration,” and “quite aggressive” for environmental problems. There are also spelling errors, including “enviromental” and “accomodate.” These do not prevent understanding, but they reduce precision and naturalness. Aim for established collocations and check spelling; for example, describe problems as “more pressing” and say that species “require suitable conditions to reproduce.”

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, including clauses introduced by “Although,” “because,” and “if.” Most of the meaning remains clear, and the longer sentences show an attempt to explain causes and consequences. Some grammatical errors remain, particularly with agreement, articles, plurals, and sentence construction. For example, “environmental problems is” should be “environmental problems are,” and “plants and animals species to extinct” needs a corrected structure such as “species of plants and animals to become extinct.” In “Although, environmental disturbance…,” the comma after “Although” is unnecessary. Review agreement and the structure of subordinate clauses, and edit longer sentences carefully so that the range you attempt is expressed more accurately.
