IELTS Writing Task 2 question

Some people say that the main environmental problem of our time is the loss of particular species of plants and animals. Others say that there are more important environmental problems.

Discuss both these views and give your own opinion.

Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.

Student answer (Band 6.0)

Environment is most important for people. A large part of the population believes say that the animals and plants are extinct in our time. While, others argue that there are more important environment problem. For example, when people cut down plants and deforests, it directly affects.

On the one hand, the loss of biodiversity is a catastrophic issue. When humans destroy forests for urbanization, it leads to habitat destruction, forcing many species to the brink of extinction. Every organism plays a vital role in the food chain; therefore, the disappearance of even a single species can disrupt the entire ecosystem and threaten human survival.

On the other hand, there are more pressing environmental crises that require immediate attention. Issues like global warming and climate change are causing rising sea levels and extreme weather patterns globally. Furthermore, pollution of air and water sources poses a direct and urgent threat to public health and the availability of clean resources.

In conclusion, while the threat of species extinction severely harms the natural ecosystem, it cannot be separated from other environmental crises. In my opinion, climate change and pollution are the root causes of biodiversity loss. Therefore, governments must focus on solving these larger problems first, which will ultimately protect both human life and endangered species.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

You address both views and give a clear opinion: the essay explains why species loss matters, then argues that climate change and pollution are more urgent and contribute to biodiversity loss. The food-chain explanation and examples of rising sea levels and extreme weather are relevant. However, the two sides are not developed equally: the first view is supported with a specific ecological consequence, while the second is mainly listed rather than explained with examples or detail. The opening also begins with an unclear statement about what people believe. The response is 38 words below the required minimum, which limits the space available to develop the discussion. Extend each side with a concrete example and explain why your chosen problems should take priority.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The overall organisation is easy to follow: an introduction, two contrasting body paragraphs signposted by “On the one hand” and “On the other hand,” and a conclusion. Linking expressions such as “therefore” and “Furthermore” help show relationships between ideas. However, cohesion is occasionally mechanical, and the opening moves abruptly from a general statement to the two positions. The sentence beginning “For example” is incomplete in meaning and does not connect clearly to the discussion that follows. The conclusion introduces the idea that climate change and pollution are root causes, but this relationship could be prepared more clearly in the body paragraphs. Develop a smoother introduction and use clearer links between claims and supporting explanations.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

You use an adequate range of topic vocabulary, including “biodiversity,” “habitat destruction,” “food chain,” “ecosystem,” and “extreme weather patterns.” These terms help communicate the environmental issues clearly, and some less common vocabulary is used appropriately. There are, however, several inaccurate or awkward choices, such as “believes say,” “environment problem,” and “deforests.” “The animals and plants are extinct in our time” also does not express the intended idea precisely; the issue is the loss or extinction of particular species. Some wording is broad or repetitive, especially “more important environmental problem.” Aim for accurate collocations and precise terms, and proofread word forms so that your vocabulary supports rather than distracts from the argument.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You attempt both simple and complex structures, and several sentences are controlled well, including “When humans destroy forests for urbanization, it leads to habitat destruction” and the concluding sentence beginning “Therefore.” Subordinate clauses and cause-and-effect structures add useful variety. Some grammatical errors remain, particularly in the opening: “A large part of the population believes say” combines incompatible verb forms, and “While, others argue” uses punctuation incorrectly and leaves a dependent clause fragment. The sentence ending “it directly affects” also lacks a clear object, making the structure incomplete. These errors do not prevent understanding of the main argument, but they reduce accuracy. Check clause completeness, verb patterns, and punctuation, especially in the introduction.
