IELTS Writing Task 2 question

Some people say that the main environmental problem of our time is the loss of particular species of plants and animals. Others say that there are more important environmental problems.

Discuss both these views and give your own opinion.

Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.

Student answer (Band 5.5)

The discussion about the enviormental problem in our time is still debateable. According to a portion of population the extinction of some species and plants are the major enviornmental problem while other believes that there are more other main enviormental problems. The Extinction of some living organisms and living vegetation are the main enviormental concern but I think there are more crucial other enviormental issues.

The other major enviormental issue is the decrease in ozone layer due to pollution and radioactive emiisions. The decrease in ozone layer distrub the wether system, like increase in temperature, which further result the melting of glaciers and also the unusual rains. This in result distrub the agricultural process and cause the decrease in production. Moreover, through depletion of ozone layer the sunlight expose to the earth surface directly also have negative effect on crops and glaciers. the melting of glaciers moreover cause the loss of fresh water source and also cause natural disasters. for instance, due to loss of excessive freash water nowadays the earth waterlevel decrase and fresh water is not accessible by a lot of people in the world.

Although the extiction of some species are the major enviormental issue like it distrubs the natural habitat and ecosystem of a lot of present species. Futhermore, through the loss of some species we also loss some essential things that can be very much benefical for us for different purpose like in medication,or in making fertilizers etc. It also cause the loss of other living things main source of food.

In short, the loss of some species is one of the enviormental issue but as it does not done the drastic effect on the living thing and the enviorment like other so, it seems to me that there are a lot of other major enviormental problems that effect the living things in more severe way.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

You address both views and state your position: species loss is serious, but you consider other environmental problems more severe. The paragraph on species loss gives relevant consequences, including disruption to ecosystems and the loss of organisms that may be useful in medicine or fertiliser production. However, the discussion of the alternative view focuses almost entirely on ozone depletion, and its effects are not always explained clearly or accurately—for example, the link between ozone depletion and falling freshwater availability needs stronger support. The view that species loss is the main problem is also less developed than your argument for other problems. To strengthen the response, explain each side more fully and use specific, well-supported examples to show why you reach your conclusion.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5

The response has a recognisable structure: an introduction, separate paragraphs for the two views, and a conclusion that restates your opinion. This gives the reader a basic route through the discussion. However, progression within paragraphs is sometimes difficult to follow, particularly where several consequences are joined together in the ozone paragraph. Connectors such as “moreover” and “in short” help signal relationships, but “moreover” is repeated and does not always clarify how one point follows from another. Some references are also unclear, such as “this in result” and “it” in the final paragraph. Organise each body paragraph around one main claim, then explain its effects in a clear sequence, using more precise referencing and a wider range of linking expressions.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.0

You use some topic-related vocabulary, including “extinction,” “ecosystem,” “depletion,” “agricultural process,” and “natural disasters,” which helps communicate the subject. However, the range is limited and several words or phrases are repeated, especially “environmental problem” and “loss.” Frequent spelling errors—such as “enviormental,” “extiction,” “distrub,” and “freash”—make the writing less fluent and can slow the reader. Some combinations are also unnatural, including “more other main environmental problems” and “the sunlight expose to the earth surface.” Build a more precise set of environmental terms, check spelling carefully, and learn common collocations so that your ideas sound natural as well as relevant.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

You attempt both simple and more complex sentences, including clauses introduced by “although” and “which,” and the overall meaning is usually recoverable. However, complex structures are often not controlled successfully. For example, “the extinction of some species and plants are” has a subject–verb agreement problem, while “the decrease in ozone layer distrub the wether system” also needs a correctly formed verb and article use. Several sentences contain incomplete or awkward clause structures, such as “Moreover, through depletion of ozone layer the sunlight expose to the earth surface directly also have negative effect.” Sentence boundaries and punctuation are inconsistent, with missing spaces after full stops and lower-case sentence openings. Practise agreement, articles, and complete clause construction, then proofread each sentence for punctuation.
