IELTS Writing Task 2 question
Some people say that the main environmental problem of our time is the loss of particular species of plants and animals. Others say that there are more important environmental problems.
Discuss both these views and give your own opinion.
Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.
Student answer (Band 6.0)
Some people argue that the essential problems related to the environment in our current time is the extinction of some kinds of plants and animals species. However, others argue that other environmental issues are more important, like climat change. In my opinion, both should be considered equally, and this essay will discuss these issues deeply.
First of all, lately the planet has faced many environmental crisis, and one of the truly concerning problems is the loss of some plants and animals. Some scientests say that these extinctions are affecting the ecosystem as a whole, and that is true. For instance, when an animal goes extinct, its predator will not be able to eat it and can be starved to death if that animal was it's only food, and also the animals species that were eaten by that extinct species can increase in number that can affect both the ecosystem and humans negatively. The whole cycle is endangered of being altered and damaged.
On the other hand, many others say that we should focus more on the other environmental issues, such as climate change. Climate change problem has expanded signifcantely in the last decade, and the increase of temperature had many people concerned about glaciers melting and causing floods. I agree that we should focus on this problem and solve it efficiently, however, animals and plants extinctions have contributed to the other environmental problems like climate change in an indirect way, so we should focus on both sides. For example, trees contribute to oxygen production through the photosynthesis process, which cleans the air and reduces overall tempratures, that's why its disappearence is a factor in climate change.
In conclusion, although many are arguing only about some aspects of environmental problems, whether it is plants and animals species going extinct or other crucial problems, both sides should taken into consideration to help solve one another.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0
You address both views and give a clear position: “both should be considered equally.” The discussion of species loss is relevant, with an explanation of how extinction can disrupt predator-prey relationships, and the climate-change paragraph gives examples involving rising temperatures and melting glaciers. However, the two sides are not developed equally: the climate-change discussion is brief, and the link between biodiversity loss and climate change is asserted rather than fully explained. The example about trees and oxygen also needs more precise support, since it does not clearly show how species extinction contributes to climate change. To strengthen the response, explain the wider effects of climate change and develop the relationship between the two environmental concerns more carefully.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0
The essay has a clear overall structure: an introduction, one paragraph for each view, and a conclusion. Signposting such as “First of all” and “On the other hand” helps readers follow the contrast, while “For instance” introduces supporting detail. The progression is generally logical, but some connections are mechanical or unclear. In the first body paragraph, the long explanation of predators and prey combines several consequences without clearly separating them. The sentence beginning “I agree that we should focus on this problem” shifts from climate change to the essay’s position, but the relationship between the ideas could be made more explicit. Use clearer links between cause and effect, and ensure references such as “both sides” in the conclusion identify the two environmental concerns precisely.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
You use a relevant range of environmental vocabulary, including “extinction,” “ecosystem,” “glaciers,” and “photosynthesis,” which allows you to discuss the topic with some specificity. There are also attempts at more formal phrasing, such as “contributed to” and “taken into consideration.” However, several spelling and word-choice errors reduce precision, including “climat change,” “scientests,” “signifcantely,” and “disappearence.” Some combinations are awkward, such as “animals and plants extinctions” and “the increase of temperature.” Aim to learn accurate forms and natural collocations as complete phrases, rather than translating word by word. More precise vocabulary for environmental impacts would also help distinguish biodiversity loss from climate change.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
You attempt a mix of simple and complex structures, including conditional clauses (“if that animal was its only food”) and a relative clause (“which cleans the air”). Most ideas remain understandable, but some grammatical errors occur in agreement, articles, verb forms, and sentence construction. For example, “the essential problems … is” has a subject–verb agreement problem, while “both sides should taken into consideration” needs a passive verb form (“should be taken”). The sentence beginning “when an animal goes extinct” becomes difficult to follow because several clauses are joined together. Review agreement in long noun phrases and use full stops to control sentence length. More accurate complex sentences would make your reasoning clearer.
