Student answer (Band 6.0)

There is considerable debate over whether the loss of particular species of plants and animals is the main environmental concern. However, other people and I believe that there are many other crucial environmental problems such as climate change and pollution. This essay will discuss both views before presenting my opinion.

On the one hand, some individuals argue that the loss of certain plants and animals is the main environmental problem in a recent time because it has a negative impact on the biodiversity. For instance, different animals play an important role in the food supply of ecosystem and their extinction may affect food-chain. Moreover, plants relase oxygen which is then absorb by humans. Therefore, declining in the number of plants and tress may affect varied habitats.

On the other hand, other people think that the climate change, pollution and rapid urbanization are the main challenges for the environment. For example, pollution can cause diverse health diseases such as allergy and asthma. Furthermore, climate change results in flooding in many parts of the world which may affect lives and houses of people. Rapid urbanization causes problems for the existing people and make cities overcrowded. In conclusion, although declining in the number of plants and animals is the major problem for the environment as it affects biodiversity, I believe, pollution is the main environmental problem because it affects health of individuals. From my perspective, the government should adopt a balanced approach by planting more trees and plants which will overcome pollution related issues. In addition, authorities should build dams to tackle floods.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

You address both views and state your own position, identifying species loss as a concern while ultimately arguing that pollution is the main problem. Relevant explanations include the role of animals in the food chain and pollution’s effects on health. However, the discussion of species loss is more developed than the other environmental issues in some places, while rapid urbanisation is mentioned briefly without a clear explanation of its environmental impact. Your conclusion also introduces planting trees and building dams as solutions, but these are not fully connected to the comparison in the essay. To strengthen the response, develop each main point with a specific example and make the relationship between your stated opinion and proposed solutions clearer.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The response has a clear overall structure: an introduction, separate paragraphs for the two views, and a conclusion. Signposting such as “On the one hand,” “On the other hand,” and “In conclusion” helps readers follow the discussion. The progression is generally logical, but some connections are mechanical, and the conclusion combines several ideas without fully showing how they relate. For example, the essay moves from pollution as the main problem to tree planting and then to dams, with limited explanation of how these measures address the stated concerns. Some references, such as “it” in the first body paragraph, could also be made more precise. Use linking phrases selectively and build clearer connections between claims, examples, and conclusions.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

You use an adequate range of topic vocabulary, including “biodiversity,” “ecosystem,” “extinction,” “climate change,” and “rapid urbanization.” These choices make the subject clear, and some less common terms are attempted. However, several word-choice, collocation, and spelling errors reduce precision: “food supply of ecosystem” is not a natural phrase, “relase” and “tress” are misspelled, and “diverse health diseases” is awkward. “Declining in the number” is also an unnatural expression. Aim for accurate, natural combinations rather than adding complexity for its own sake. Proofreading spelling and checking collocations would help make your vocabulary more precise while preserving the clear meaning.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, including clauses introduced by “because,” “which,” and “although.” Most ideas remain understandable, but some grammatical errors affect accuracy. For example, “in a recent time” has an incorrect article and time expression, while “plants … which is then absorb” has problems with agreement and verb form. In “Rapid urbanization causes problems … and make cities overcrowded,” the verb does not agree with the singular subject. The conclusion’s “although …, I believe, pollution” also has awkward punctuation and clause structure. Practise checking subject–verb agreement, articles, and verb forms, and revise longer sentences to ensure each clause is grammatically complete.
