IELTS Writing Task 2 question

Some people say that the main environmental problem of our time is the loss of particular species of plants and animals. Others say that there are more important environmental problems.

Discuss both these views and give your own opinion.

Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.

Student answer (Band 5.0)

It is argued that the major reason of environmental damage of our time is the loss of particular species of plants and animals. However, there are several phenomenon which causes environmental issues, these problems are not overly discussed.

One primary reason of environmental damage is the fact of losing particular species of plants and animals. This particular species help us to protect the wildlife from damages. These species of animals play a pivotal role in food webs and cycle nutrients. In this way, they help to keep natural systems stable. If one species is lost, the entire environment can change or collapse. Moreover, the particular species of plants help to balance the ecosystem by giving oxygen and food. They help to absord more carbon dioxide from the atmosphere. That is why, we are suffering from climate change and global warming because of losing these species. Nowadays, we can rarely see many kind of special species of plants and animals in our nature. This becomes one of the reason of rising global temperature and natural disasters.

Furthermore, there are many other more environmental problems which are happening over the world. By way of illustration, excessive polution and huge rate of carbon emission is another major reason of enviromental problem. People use lots of vehicles for their transportation, while their fuels emit carbon dioxide and many other chemicals which are harmful for environment. In addition, they are throwing industrial waste in the environment. That is also causes environment polution.

In conclusion, the role of particular species of plants and animals in the ecosystem is indispensable. So the loss of them can be a major reason of environmental problem. Also human being are responsible for the environment polution.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.0

You address both views by explaining why species loss matters and then introducing pollution and carbon emissions as other environmental problems. Relevant points include species’ roles in food webs and nutrient cycles, and vehicle emissions and industrial waste. However, the discussion is only partial: the second view receives less explanation, and the essay does not clearly compare which problem you consider most important. Your opinion is implied in the conclusion, but “the role … is indispensable” is not developed into a clear, consistent position about the question. Some claims also need support or qualification, particularly the link between species loss and global warming. To strengthen the response, state your view directly and explain each side with a specific example or clearer reasoning. The response meets the stated length requirement; 13 words copied from the prompt were not counted.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.0

The response has a recognisable structure: an introduction, separate paragraphs on species loss and other environmental problems, and a conclusion. This helps the reader identify the two sides. However, progression within paragraphs is sometimes unclear, and several links are mechanical or inaccurate. For example, “In this way” and “Moreover” connect points, but the relationship between species loss and climate change is asserted rather than explained. The opening sentence also introduces “several phenomenon” without clearly setting up the two views. The conclusion repeats the importance of species and pollution but does not bring the comparison together. Use clearer topic sentences, develop one point at a time, and make references such as “these species” and “that” unambiguous.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use some topic-specific vocabulary, including “food webs,” “nutrients,” “ecosystem,” “carbon emission,” and “industrial waste,” which makes the subject clear. There are also attempts at more formal phrasing, such as “play a pivotal role” and “indispensable.” However, the range is limited and several word choices or collocations are inaccurate or repetitive: “major reason of environmental damage,” “protect the wildlife from damages,” and “many kind of special species” are not natural expressions. Spelling errors such as “polution,” “enviromental,” and “absord” are noticeable. Aim for precise, natural combinations—for example, “a major environmental concern” and “species diversity”—and check spelling and plural forms carefully.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

You attempt a mixture of simple and complex sentences, including conditional and relative structures: “If one species is lost, the entire environment can change or collapse” is clear, and “which are harmful for environment” shows an attempt to add detail. However, the range is limited, and errors occur frequently enough to make some sentences awkward or difficult to follow. Examples include “there are several phenomenon which causes,” where the noun and verb do not agree, and “That is also causes,” which has an incorrect verb form. Other problems include “one of the reason,” “human being are,” and missing or incorrect articles. Practise subject–verb agreement, singular and plural forms, and article use, then proofread each sentence for a complete, correctly formed verb pattern.
