IELTS Writing Task 2 question
Some people say that the main environmental problem of our time is the loss of particular species of plants and animals. Others say that there are more important environmental problems.
Discuss both these views and give your own opinion.
Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.
Student answer (Band 6.0)
Some people may argue that the main environmental problem of our time is the extinction of specific of plant and animal while others may think that there may be other essential environmental problems we have to deal with in todays day and age. While it is true that extinction of some plants and animals is quite devastating, I think there are other crucial problems that need immediate attention to avoid further damage on the environment.
On one hand, the extinction of particular species can have serious consequences for the environment. Every specie plays a significant role in maintaining the balance of its ecosystem, the dissappearance of one can affect many others. For example, the decline in bee population can reduce pollination, which is essential for many crops and wild plants. Furthermore, once a specie becomes extinct it can not be brought back naturally. This makes the loss of biodiversity an irreversible problem which will effect plants and disrupt ecosystems
On the other hand, there are several other environmental problems that have a wider effect on human life and the planet. Climate change, for instance, leads to rising temperatures, melting of the icebergs which rises the sea level which can be incredibally dangerous for low coastal cities like Karachi for example. This does not only cause problems to the wildlife but also agriculture, water supplies and human settlement. Air pollution is also a serious issue, especially in larger cities, where emissions from factories and car can damage peoples health and cause diseases. In my opinion, these problems deserve more attention and need to be resolved as soon as possible because they affect the entire population and can also accelerate the destruction of natural habitats.
In conclution, althought the extinction of particular species of plants and animals is a serious environmental concern as it can irreversible effects and disrupt ecosystems, other environmental problems such as climate change and air pollution also have adverse effects on the planet. Governments should make efforts to reduce and control all these problems instead of just focusing on one.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5
You address both views and give a clear opinion: the first body paragraph explains why species loss matters, while the second argues that climate change and air pollution have broader effects. Relevant examples, including bee pollination and risks to Karachi, help support the discussion. This meets the task well, though the two sides are not developed equally: the case for other environmental problems receives more explanation, while the species-loss paragraph would benefit from explaining more fully how ecosystem disruption affects people or the wider environment. The conclusion restates your position and recommends action on all the problems. To strengthen the response further, extend the reasoning behind each example and make the comparison between the problems more explicit.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5
The response has a coherent overall structure, with an introduction, separate paragraphs for the two views, and a conclusion. Signposts such as “On one hand,” “On the other hand,” and “In conclusion” make the progression easy to follow. Some connections are less smooth or precise, however. In the climate-change sentence, repeated “which” clauses make the relationship between melting ice, sea-level rise, and danger to coastal cities difficult to track. The reference in “the disappearance of one” is understandable but could identify more clearly what is disappearing and how this affects other species. Use linking phrases more selectively and divide long chains of related effects into clearer sentences to make cohesion less mechanical.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
You use relevant environmental vocabulary, including “biodiversity,” “pollination,” “ecosystems,” “emissions,” and “natural habitats,” which allows you to discuss the topic with some specificity. There are also attempts at more formal phrasing, such as “deserve more attention” and “irreversible problem.” However, noticeable spelling and word-choice errors reduce precision: “dissappearance,” “incredibally,” and “conclution” are misspelled, while “specific of plant and animal” and “melting of the icebergs” are awkward or imprecise. Some expressions are also repetitive, particularly “environmental problems.” Build accuracy by checking spelling and choosing natural collocations, and vary repeated terms with precise alternatives such as “environmental threats” or “ecological challenges.”
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
You attempt a mix of simple and complex structures, including a contrast clause in the introduction and conditional phrasing such as “once a species becomes extinct.” Most ideas remain understandable, but some grammatical errors and punctuation problems affect clarity. For example, “Every specie plays …, the disappearance of one can affect many others” joins two independent clauses with only a comma. In “This does not only cause problems to the wildlife but also agriculture,” the parallel structure is incomplete, and “which rises the sea level which can be” contains an unclear chain of clauses. There are also agreement and article issues, as in “emissions from factories and car.” Practise accurate clause boundaries, parallel constructions, and agreement while retaining your attempts at complex sentences.
